Cliffnotes: Thinking about changing from XJ to K5 for DD.

I've been thinking lately. My current DD is a 98 2dr Cherokee (XJ) with a 4.0L and 5 speed on ~4" of lift and 31x10.50/R15's. It's got over 215k on the clock. I've built a custom front receiver that's hidden behind the factory front bumper and done some other things to it. The t-case has pretty much had it, the front axle needs rebuilt and the 3.55's I swapped in need to be switched for at least 3.73s if not 4.10s.

I've been considering either selling it or trying to trade it for a K5 with a 6.2L in it. I've heard they get ~20mpg (same as my Jeep) and I'm more familiar with GM parts. Also having plenty of GM parts laying around is a plus. I was wondering what you guys thought about this conundrum. Possibly thinking 5 or 6 speed manual swap. Cruise control is a must due to distance driven weekly.

Additional info: I drive ~400 miles a week to work and back. I also have a friend who wants me to keep the XJ so we can do open/open stockish DD wheeling at places like Uwharrie and other local trails. The XJ was also my first 4WD and was a gift from my Dad when I found out I was going to be a dad and needed something more dependable than a Cavalier you could sneak out the rear quarter panels of.

diesel K5 for sure, once you wheel an xj alot, even easy wheeling they start to come apart, literally.

I've seen this first hand. There are about 3 XJ's on ~35" tires in the club. One has several cracks in the unibody structure and makes some interesting sounds when it's flexing out.

Well, I'm biased but I say go diesel K5.

However realize again you're dealing with driving one of these rust trap trucks as a DD.

Also, watch out for the tow package. I get about 15mpg. The 3.08's and small tires guys are the ones who get 20+ mpg.

Diesel K5.

20mpg out of this one...

I wanna know what your tow package is to drop your mileage that far...

This got 16.5 mpg, 39.5's, no OD and 4.56's...

For me to go through with this, I'm going to have to find one from either NC or SC that is in good shape with no rust. My XJ is clean as far as rust goes and there's no way I'd buy one to DD that wasn't nice. I don't want something I'm going to HAVE to work on much before I can drive it.

As far as gearing, I've got a set of 3.08 geared 10b's and a set of 3.42 geared 10b/12b w/ rear gov-lock I can put in it. I was thinking that the 3.42 set on 33's would be good since they are very close to the same setup as the 3.08's on 31's.

The only reason I'd stay away from a CUCV is because of the lack of cruise control. A/C isn't that big a deal, it'll probably get a soft top for summer use anyways, but A/C is nice when on the interstate and it's raining out. I've started looking, so we'll see what I can turn up!

Want to sell those?

At the moment, they are under my K5 with a locker in the front and a mini spool getting ready to go in the rear. The'll be run will I can get a set built with 4.56's and lift the blazer.

Frankly I'm not certain. Honestly I need to refigure it a bit lately but it was what I was getting pretty consistantly. The majority of my driving is in D and not OD as I'm usually on city streets, 3.73's, originally meant to have 235's, wondering about the locking converter on my 700R4.

My pick-up has 3.42's and 235/75's with the 700R4. I leave it in OD everywhere. I get over 20 mpg combined driving with that...and it's been turned up a good amount. The diesel 700R4 will lock up the TC in 3rd and 4th, rather than just in OD. You should be able to feel it do that.

Only problem I have with OD is if I leave it in that gear it's trying to shift into OD at like 35mph on city streets. Then if I need to go faster it's either slamming back into 3rd or just moseying along slowly accelerating while stuck in OD.

I disconnected the EGR and all those solenoids on the d-side rear of the engine that were hooked to it. I sorta wonder about my torque converter as I hear that has something to do with vacuum? I really do need to pay more attention to see if it's actually coming on.

I voted for the K5 diesel. I like my M1009 enough to daily drive it. A radio would be nice though .

Lol I hear ya there . I also DD my M1009. Ive gotten about 16.5mpg mixed driving and just over 15 highway. I love driving it!

Well, I've started looking into getting one. Saving money and searching to see how they are priced/optioned.

Found this (only nice one so far) a few hours from the house:
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/1599561602.html

How does that look for price and condition? Guy won't e-mail me back any info on it, and I don't have the money for that yet, just browsing to get an idea of how much $$ I need.

look for M1009s at military auctions...i drove one in the operational field for years as well as M1008's and M998's all are diesle and can run off either diesel or Jet fuel. they are strong engines. well worth the find if you can get your hands on one.

BTW i HEART PBR :)

How is your M1009 set up (tires, gears, etc.)? The lack of a radio is a nice change sometimes. Mine seems like it gets close to 20 mpgs but it has small (or stock) tires on it. And yeah it is fun to drive. You can take the roof off and leave it off. After all there is no radio to worry about :D.

I have only diven my M1009 through two tanks so far daily driving it. First tank was 20mpg on diesel and the second tank was 15 mpg on B20.

Stock axles and tires.
