Is it possible to find out exactly what year truck my 14bff is out of??

I know it came out of a 1973-80 3/4 ton GMC camper speacial pick up, but I want to know exactly what year.

Any numbers on the housing that will tell me??

Thanks.

axle codes..

There is a 3 letter code stamped on one axle tube--its supposedly on the right axle tube according to GM,but several times I found them somewhere else,or on the left tube!..had to wire brush the whole dam thing to find them, and they often are not stamped too deep,so if its rusty,it might be obliverated already!..codes like "TRD", etc..

GM parts counter guys can look up the codes and tell the ratio, and what year it is...another date is stamped right into the outside edge of the ring gear--but if its been swapped,it wont tell you the year of the housing, just what year the guts are from....

Easiest is on the ring gear. It doesnt matter though all 1st gen 14 bolts are the same (with out gettign too carried away:rolleyes:)

Thanks guys. I know for a fact the guy that sold it to me said it had the original gears inside.

I just found some numbers on the ring gear that say "41 10 6 76"

I am thinking "41 10" =4.10 ratio and "6 76" = June 1976?

I believe so...

If im correct the 41 means 41 teeth on the ring ger and the 10 means 10 pinnion teeth...

And i do believe the 6-76 is the date
