Finished my lift, now I\'ve got steering bump. Help!

Just got the Skyjacker easy ride lift on. 4" lift, new bushing everywhere, swaybar etc. 4" raised steering arm included. So now I have steering bump on everything, and my steering wheel is 90degrees to the left. I know that I'll need to recenter it but should I take a few turns out on the drag link, or take the steering wheel off? And on the steering bump do I just need a new steering stabalizer? Or get duals? Or is something else messed up?

Displacement, cubes, and did you say you drive a riceburner???

Re: Finished my lift, now I\'ve got steering bump. Help!

You need to adjust the draglink so the wheel is centered.

I would definitely put on new steering stabilizers. Single is good, but duals are better, especially for bigger tires.

Re: Finished my lift, now I\'ve got steering bump. Help!

Take a few turns out on the drag link. With a lift and stock steering you will almost always get bump steer. Putting dual steering stabalizers help, alnog with putting the sway bar relocating brackets on there. When you lift it, the sway bar ends up on a goofy angle, so it wont work right. I know skyjacker has relocationg brackets that lower the front of the sway bar. They work real good. Offroad design also has sway bar correction/disconnects. The work good, but not as well as the relocating brackets because Offroad designs sre only a 2 inch correction, while the relocation ones are 4 inches.

Crank the draglink definitely - and look into either dual stabilizers or a coilover.

Re: Finished my lift, now I\'ve got steering bump. Help!

the length of the drag link effects more then the steering wheel alignment. it is the adjustment to cetre the box so that you have equal # of turns of the wheel to the left and right. once you get the same # of turns of the wheel left and right pull the wheel off the column and put it back on straight.
i can never figure out you people that want to mess with the draglink to straighten the wheel after i spend an afternoon testing until i get the length where i want it.

About the steering-bump, you will get used to the diffrent feel when hitting road iregularities. I added the Off Road design steeringbrace that you can read about on the tech section here at Coloradok5. It helped stiffen upp the steering response. Twiztid (Eric) did a exelent job explaining this sometime around the 5/26/2001 Try searching for his response to a simular post.

Here's a dumb question...did you torque the u-bolts with the weight of the truck on the springs or when it was up on stands? They should be done with weight on the springs or otherwise you get some quirky handling.

for the 6 inch lift wouldnt the 4'' skyjacker and the ORD 2'' one be good?

Re: Finished my lift, now I\'ve got steering bump. Help!

That was my post from not too lond ago. Went through the same thing you are doing. I put dual steering stabilizers on it, the ORD sway bar corrects, and still had bump steer. I relocated the front of the sway bar down two inches so it would sit level and got rid of almost all of it. Only had to move the front down two inches because the sway bar was raised two in the rear. I still have a little though. Cross over steering is about the only way to get rid of it.

Re: Finished my lift, now I\'ve got steering bump. Help!

Pardon my ignorance but what is steering bump?
When I put on my 4 inch lift I also put on a 4 inch raised steering arm, ORD Brace, didn't touch the stabilizer bar, added 35 inch tires and kept the single stabilizer. My truck handles much better than it ever did stock.

Re: Finished my lift, now I\'ve got steering bump. Help!

What springs did you use? That makes the biggest difference. If the sping weight is alot(stiff aprings like rancho and rough country), then you dont get bumpsteer, but it rides like crap. If you get soft springs its rides great, but has bumpsteer.

Hay, thanks again for the "upps" ,Espen88k5!

Check it out and see if it helps anyone w/the "bumpsteer" problem. (That sucker took forever to type-out)

Re: Finished my lift, now I\'ve got steering bump. Help!

I assune you used the ORD kit in the rear part of the sway bar? I already have a drop up front and the steering is pretty good... but could be a bit better and have heard excellent results from the ORD disconnects
