Gonna swap the 33 inch tire for a 35 tomorrow. Prime the rest of it and paint it as well.

That a shock absorber in the center as the third link? Sweet idea!

Dang, Dontoe, and I thought you just posted useless crap in the Lounge :haha:

[NB: it's useless enough that I look at every one of them :deal: ]

It's a small top link for a tractor. Hard to tell in the other photo.

A machine shop made the hinges, a metal worker bent the tubing. A bender is on my list though.

Man I like that. I have been trying to find a place around here to bend one for me. Any chance you have some dimensions and angles.:D

Will it hold a 42? What would need to be changed to make it work if it wont hold one as is?

Ira

Sure, James "79Stomper" had a 39" on his, IIRC.
I had this one bent to my specs.

:waytogo: At least you won't have to look at some jerk tail gating you anymore!!:D
Nice work!

The tire carrier on the red and white K5 above was designed to carry a 42" swamper. I built that one for nvrenuf a few years ago. I also built the one for 79Stomper. Here's a pic of it installed on my K5 with 38's.

There are several reasons to go this route if you run larger tires, especially over the swing out carrier.
  • The weight is distributed directly over the frame, not hanging out on one side.
  • It's easier to lift the tire, because you install it on the carrier while on the ground, then you use leverage to lift the tire into place.
  • It makes a nice ladder to climb in the back of the K5 when the carriers up. Or a nice ramp when the carriers down.
  • If you turn it upside down, you can use it for a picnic table.:haha:
Good work dontoe!

Thanks, I'm terrible on names. DPI's work was my inspiration!

Also makes a great mount for a "Mother-in-law seat"!!! :wink1:

Looks great. It looks like you can now mount your license plate up where you mount your tire. This would keep it from getting scraped off from the rocks.

this is a very good way to store a big spare tire. Unlike a lot of storage methods, with this kind of carrier its possible for one person to get to / use their spare. Every once in a while I see some skinny bastage with a 42 or 44 mounted way up high on a rig and I wonder how they expect to get it down, and the other tire up there way out in the bush. Sure, most people wheel with friends, but ya never know what kind of situation you might find yourself in. Could get lost or stranded or injured or something. With this type of carrier things would be much easier.

my 39.5 TSLs on steel rims are about 125 pounds a pop. Lifting one 5' in the air by myself is a reciepe for a hernia or something. lol!
