Fire Extinguisher

You can buy whatever brand you want, just make sure it's ABC rated. Don't worry about being rechargeble. It usually costs more to recharge one than it does to buy a new one. Home Depot is a great place to get one.

ok, let me say it again..

put it this way,

cheap home depot throw away 2.5 lb..10.99
cheap plastic head fx with a guage 2.5 lb 17-19.99
a full metal cheap brand "kidde/first alert" 5 lb 29.99

the last of the three is the best for all around use and is also recharchanble..20-30.00 for a recharge on a 5 pound fx.

a amerex/ansel is a better fx, for a 5 lb abc or bc I sell them for 59.95 after mark up, I buy them by the pallet. price as of january just went up so mine will reflect that next month.

a halon will set you back wel over a hundred bucks, and recharge is not cheap too.

i personally have maybe ten fx of these two and other brand fx, that have held pressure for 20 years in a arizona at the air port, they are junk and out of date, but were not serviced, hydrotested or touched since 1986..all have pressure and with the use a a rubber hammer they will work falwless.

buy one that reflects you investment and your wisdome.

for a actual effective

a bc, a halon, clean guard, co2 will be more effective in a fuel drivin fire, I personally have watched my blazer burn to the ground, the cheap plastic headede fx that was maybe 6 months old lost its pressure.

in a auto, the temps inside a car during the summer head can reach 140 degrees, that do you think that does to a cheap plastic head on the fx, not the mention the big degree difference is not nice to the rubber seal, when the head is doing this. there is a differance. if you will dump 9 grand in your truck, in some cases 40 grand, then you decide to use a 10 dollar fire extinguisher from ace hardware or wallmart? for a HOME kitchen that is fine, not for your auto.

THANKS 10 DOLLAR FIRE EXTINGUISHER....!!

now bring your insurance into the picture...

good luck getting your money back, in the case of an auto this is not always a life saving tool, it is a property saving tool. a halon , or halotron is far more effective than a abc rated fx, I have used both, I do demo's for businesses from 2 people to 400 for training, there is a differance. there is a reason some of the largerst server companies in the world here in phoenix use clean guards or halon in their server rooms around computers.

You can still buy Halon fire extiguishers? I thought they stopped using it because it was dangerous to people (suffocation).

All extinguishers are a suffocation hazard to humans that is how they put out the fire they remove the oxygen element from the fire triangle (well most of them do not all). Halon is no longer used widely due to its effects on the Ozone layer. Halon is a refrigerant and the Chlorine in it will damage the ozone. It is still used in some aircraft applications and electronic applications cause it works so well.

Well there isn't a big mess with halon afterwards but I too thought you couldn't buy halon anymore for enviromental reasons.

The average citizen usually cant. He said he got them from an airport as he services them. The government can use what ever they want and they have stockpiles of it. Just like no one can manufacture R-12 anymore and few can buy it but the Navy has thousands of pounds of R-12 for use on its ships.

The clean air act prevents the manufacture of ozone depelting refrigerants but the sale of them is still legal until the current stores are depleted.

Well most people DO NOT know how to use an extinguisher. They aim at the flames and not at the base of the flame. Now you do not want to shoot straight down into the base because if it is liquid you will splatter it.

You use the extinguisher to smoother the fire. The thing to remember is the fire triangle you only need to remove one to stop a fire.

1. fuel
2. ignition source,extreme heat
3. oxygen

The fire extinguisher is meant to remove the Oxygen from the fire. Read the instructions before you need it is a good start. Most people have 2.5 pound ones I prefer the 5 pound size.

Here is a link EVERY ONE needs to visit and learn from even if you think you know about it.

The reason they use that type is it is friendly to electronics and the electronics do not get the dry chem all over and can be put back in service faster.

On another note most vehicle fires I have dealt with in 28 years have been related to wiring incorrectly hooked up stereo equipment or lights. Plastic oil gauge lines melting and starting fires in engine compartment or improper gauge wire for amp meters...

Once you have a auto fire you will want an extinguisher. I had a 1974 Chevy with a Q Jet that the accelerator pump went and dumped on manifold and light up my world. Since then I carry!

ya what he said.

I have had the benefit of being trained in firefighting tactics. On subs we do not have a fire department we fight our own so everyone on board goes to school to learn how to fight fires. I kinda like the way the thread has started to go as it seems to be providing a lot of useful info not just where to get a FX.

you still can get halon, there are also a few other simlar products that are less harmfull tot he enviroment.

my business is fire safety, I cant help but seem or notice extinguishers everywhere I go..hell I find them in my dreams.

a 5 lb is great size for a pick up, and as stated above effectivly using them has alot to do with the outcome.

So far all the info is pretty acurate and valuable. Having an extinguisher is a good start but knowing how to use it is JUST as important.

Definitely don't waste time and money with the small ones. We have the room in our trucks for a decent sized extinguisher get one of those. And two small ones DOES NOT equal one big one. Extinguishing the fire must be done start to finish, stopping to grab a second extinguisher after the first empties, gives the fire enough time to grow again.

On the clumping issue, our local tech noted that part of the reason for the inspections and services is to deal with the dry powder clumping together. It will do this hanging on the wall.
Imagine what bouncing it around will do. I make a point of laying mine on their side so that every couple of months I CAN turn them over and let the clump form on the other side of the bottle.

Airgas has a 5 Lb abc on sale for $35 it is not a kiddie I cant remember the name. It has an aluminum valve, a gauge, and is rechargable. Is $35 a good deal?

yes:D

Buy the biggest one that you can afford. If you 100% positive that your going to have a small fire the get a small one. LOL. Scrimping on an FX is liking putting 20" spinners on a yugo.

I dont really want to have to find a spot for a 10# FX in my K5. The 5# is a good size that I can prolly mount on a fender. That leaves the other fender for the highlift.
