I saw a 6.5 TD in the junkyard where the front of the engine had been on fire. Looks like the rad melted. I was wondering if the manifolds and turbo would be worth getting?

Long as they weren't damaged by the fire, yes they would be worth getting. Just keep this in mind; the stock 6.5 turbo setup interferes with the 73-87 A/C heater box.

Kinda hard to tell if parts that were sesigned to take alot of heat were damaged by the heat. I know the passenger's side manifold looks a hell of alot better than mine does.
I didn't realize that stuff would interfere, I don't have AC or anything and the box is pretty small. Thanks

I'm sure the stuff got hot in the fire, it gets hot while the engine is running too. I would check to see that nothing major has been melted or warped. Long as that didn't happen it should be ok. Manifolds can take a TON of heat, like cherry red heat, and be good long as the cool in they same position they were heated up in.

Yea, I have a 6.5 turbo setup in my chevy and I had to get rid of the stock A/C box. I'm putting in a vintage air setup. Since you only have heat you shouldn't have clearance issues but I can't say for certain.

If I ever turbo'd a 6.2 in an 80s truck ever again and it has stock A/C that works, I would run a banks manifold. Its made to fit by moving the turbo farther forward on the engine. I'm kicking myself for getting rid of a good stock a/c setup but I was younger and dumber then :doah:. Course can't say I'm much smarter now :haha:. I'm installing a duramax intercooler into my truck. Wow what a headache :yikes: but it'll be sweet when done. :saweet::woot:

Nice, make sure and post some pics so I can dream about an intercooler too! What kind of piping are you using? The only intercooler kits I saw were amazingly expensive, and not for my truck, so I was thinking of making my own as well.

I've been taking pictures as I go, just haven't had time to do a write up yet. For piping think I'm going to just use exhaust pipe for right now. Its cheap, easy to make fit, and it'll hold just fine with only 20lbs of boost.

Yea the kits they make are the newer trucks that came with the 6.5. While I'm using a duramax intercooler if I ever had to redo it or did another truck. I would go with a 94-02 dodge cummins intercooler. Both require a fair amount of mods to the end tanks on the cooler, but the duramax has required a lot of mods to the core support as well. It'll look good and fairly clean when done, just a lot of extra work.

If you plan to do your own one day, being able to weld aluminum yourself opens up a lot of options as to what you can fit in the truck.
