I rebuilt a firepit using retaining wall bricks. Outside diameter is around 5’. Spent a lot of time getting it level & used motor to keep everything together. Decided to line it w/ firebricks, in hopes of prolonging the life of the retaining wall bricks . I’m using refractory cement to adhere the bricks to the inner part of the firepit. That would be the issue, I’m not having much luck getting the firebricks to stick to the retaining wall bricks. For fun I mixed in some run of the mill motor, that seems to help a little.

After letting them sit overnight, only about half are sticking.

Any thoughts on getting better adhesion?

Since ya'll are picture junkies, here is the firepit

No pics of the firebrick - just the stock amazon picture

I have always dry stacked with an air gap between the fire bricks and outside stones.
Cap stones sit on top of the fire bricks as well as the bricks ring.
I use a different kind of stone though.
Finishing this tomorrow.

I like the steel insert idea - but I opted for brick as I wasn't able to find any steel w/ a diameter that worked. For airflow, the old firepit was around the same size and construction, so airflow wasn't really an issue. If it ever becomes one, some of the smaller bricks were not cemented & can be knocked loose if needed.

Scroll down and you’ll see the stuff I used. It helps to wet the block and brick some. I used some thin L metal and cut it to bend on the inside. Used this to hold the bottom of the bricks for alignment and cure time. They all seem to be holding strong. :dunno: It’s my first time, can’t say I know what I’m doing or remember LOL

I used Loctite Masonry Adhesive for the fire bricks around my fire pit. It’s been holding up well for 7 years.
