First Attempt 71 rebuild: running again!

It is connected to automatic.

Yeah, i guess that set up is common enough to yield options and varying costs. I'm mating mine up to an sm465 and for some reason i dont know, theyre not so common and options are fewer and more expensive. Im determined to get it done now though

Put my truck in 4x4 for the second time ever the other day. Had a nasty hill to go up in a nasty snow storm. Anyhow, front end started making a whining noise after a while so i took it out of 4x4 asap. Next day went to change the differential oil and found there was none to be changed :doah: forgot to take pics, but it just looked like a dry differential. doesn't look like any metal was chewed up or damaged though at least.

Went to the machine shop today before work too. Had to have a little chat with the guy on the fact that the block has been there for coming up on 2 months, and supposed to have been done twice now. We agreed that it will be done first thing Monday. So I am looking forward to that so I can order up the 400ci rotating assembly and get this sucker progressing. I'm sick of sitting on too much money :haha:

Engine is all bored out now. Ordered up the rotating assembly, it is being delivered to a shop in VT where I also sent my flywheel so it can all be balanced.

Past couple days I got the block all painted up, cleaned up the intake, lapped my valves and seats etc. I also took apart the xfer case, blasted it and put it back together and painted it up. Things are starting to come together now....hopefully this drive train will be sitting all ready to go within the next month!

Parts parts and more parts!

Made a deal for a TON of parts today. Got myself a parts Blazer and a ton of other stuff the guy had laying around. It was the fellow I bought stuff from a month or so ago, I decided to clean him out of everything. The best part... I acquired a decent shape SINGLE WALL TOP. It's a little rough, but salvageable. I got a couple transmissions, xfer case, tons of badges, dash pads, 2 other hard tops, couple hoods (for a 69/70 blazer though) rear seat, and tons of other internal components. I'll prolly end up selling off some of the stuff in the future for the 70 blazer possibly. Depends on my buddy who might split some of it with me.

Engine is coming along nicely. Dry fitted the crank and a piston to check clearances on the block due to the elongated stroke. Had to grind a tiny bit down to give clearance for the connecting rod caps, then started the assembly. Rotating assembly camshaft, lifter, timing chain etc is all put together and i tossed the cylinder heads on today. Hopefully next week it will be all ready to go in the truck! :woot:

Kinda confused by the Haynes manual I have.. telling me to put 80 ft-lbs of torque on the oil pan and timing cover bolts.... definitely didn't do that; way too much for 1/4" stainless bolts that came with the parts. Maybe they meant inch pounds and labeled it wrong, I dont know...

Anyhow, motor is 90% built up now. Finishing up a few things tomorrow then it should be ready to go in the truck during my vacation next week.

Good thing you labelled those photos so we could tell them apart!!!! :)

Nice job. One clean part on an old truck can be a great motivator to continue your work. I see a 55-gallon drum of SimpleGreen in your future. :waytogo:

beautiful! It's always nice to have something tangible to look at to show your progress.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Can't wait til tomorrow when I start prepping everything for the engine swap, starting a nice 12 days of vacation. I just ordered myself a 6 inch suspension lift as well to replace the old tired springs. Getting pumped to see the transformation begin. :woot:
