NM, i was able to remove it with a telescoping magnet with little trouble, thanks for the help though.

last night, i broke my first front axle shaft, i blew the u joint and sheered the shaft in half at the neckdown point just before where the inner splines start. i just wanted some ideas on how you guys remove the broken part still in there, the axle is a Ford Dana 44 w/ a Detroit TrueTrac and it's the short side shaft. is a strong magnet the way to go? Thanks.

Yeah the only way other than taking the gears out is to find one of those 5lbs or 8 lbs magnets.
I tried a bunch of them till I found one strong enough to pull the stub thru the seal in the housing end.
Good luck.
I found my magnet at napa, it's telescopic and rated at 8 lbs

When I broke a shaft off inside the diff, I finally had to take apart the other side, remove the cross-pin, and then slide a broom handle from the other side to knock out the piece.
