How do I determine if my 1979 Jimmy is a 1st design or 2nd design. I have a 5.7 L 350 and full time 4x4.

Thanks for any help!

What? Like, first generation vs. second generation?

The 1969-72 was a different body style than yours, then 73-91 was the next generation.

In ordering some parts, specific to a 1979 Jimmy, it asks if you have a 1st design or 2nd design. I have checked with my GM dealer, LMC truck and several other places but they have no idea. I have seen some things in LMC's catalog that asks that question too.

Are you getting parts for the front axle? Steering parts catalogs refer to first or second gen, this is talking about the tie rod going into the knuckle from the top or bottom. It's been too long for me, I can't remember which is which but the catalog should explain it.

Yeah, it is parts for steering and suspension. I will check a few more catalogs to see if they show the tie rods - maybe that will tell me what I need to know.

Thanks!

Fwiw you most likely have the second design because the change was mid '77 BUT there are trucks as far up as '81 that got the first design parts.

From what I've read the difference is first = d44 and second = 10 bolt but I don't know if there was any related parts mixing between the axles during the carry over years. (if that makes sense)
