Finally finished my first major (to me) fabrication job on my blazer. So far I'm trying to keep the OEM bumpers on my rig and had no place to put a spare that was safe and accessible so I decided to fab up a spare tier carrier for the hitch since I don't tow anything. Down the line I'll probably get real tube bumpers with tire carrier but I'm real happy with the way this turned out. It even folds down to get access to the tailgate. Give me your honost opinion so I can use it in the future other projects. Let the pic whoring begin:

That is really nice. If I didn't have to tow my trailer I would probably use something like that. But as it stands I have a design for the rear bumper and will incorporate a front hub to allow the carrier to swing to the side. No room for a 33 or 35 spare inside the truck.

Looks really nice dude. One question. Do you feel any bounce from it? I had a carrier hanging off the back and the little "bounce" from the tire drove me crazy.

Thanks fellas for all the compliments. Feels good to do sh1t yourself and have it turn out well.

There is very very little movement of the entire carrier at all. Absolutely no back and forth and so little side to side movement that you physically have to push it with your hands to make any movement. I really don't notice any bounce either. It's pretty solid. The only downside is the departure angle is reduced but I don't do a lot of that type of wheeling to worry about that issue.

The only two things I'd do different... The top "bolt" would be a pin with a clip so it is easier to drop, and I'd put the tire down a bit lower so it wouldn't restrict your rear vision...

Other than that, it really looks good

Actually, the top nut is a castle nut with a clevis-type pin through it but I didn't drill the hole in the bolt properly so I just tighten it like a regular nut until I find the perfect pin like you said. As for the height, it is just high enough to not see cars close behind me. I just fabbed as I went and didn't do a lot of measuring or planning. All in all I'm pleased.

you need a spring pin........not a roll pin or cotter. what size hole is it? and bolt? I'll mail you one.

seriously......drill out to an 1/8th hole in the bolt. ditch the castle nut add a washer and one of these. voila you have quickrelease.

Yeah, that is about the best way to go. I'll just take one of my old hitch pin. Good heads up, I appreciate it.
