First Gen electric fan set-up NEW Pics 1-25-09

Here's a couple pics of an elec. fan sitting in a big block shroud, if you can find one it's the way to go, LOTS more clearance to the water pump.

The change was pretty much mandatory for me, I found rub marks on the fan motor where the pulley had been chewing on it.

Well...I purchased a used Lincoln Mark VIII fan online and mounted it in my shroud. I have taken photos of the install and will add the final electric install pics when the controller come in this week. Just in time for the snow.

Photo #1: I used an air recipricating saw to trim off the portions of the fan housing that I will not need.

Photo #2: I brought the Blazer shroud in to my shop and placed 2x4 wood to level out the edge of the fan to the edge of the fan housing. I did not want the fan housing sticking out towards the water pump. I also liked the clean mount look.

Photo #3: There was a 1/2" gap between the inner diameter of the shroud and the outer diameter of the fan housing. I used small pieces of rubber fuel line to act as a spacer and shock absorber.

Photo #4: I used tee-nuts after drilling 5/16" holes through the shroud and fan housing. I used four equal distance mounting points. Any bolt will do, I used allen head cap bolts for looks.

Photo #5: The final mount installed, with equal distance all the way around. I'll post the electrical hook up when I do it this week.

Thanks for looking...Rick

Brian, that is the nices fan setup I have seen. Can you give the specs of the fans as far as the CFM and diameter of each and which fans you got. Also, how did you make the shroud? Is it aluminum or sheet metal and did you weld the corners of the shroud or use rivets? All the info would be very helful. Great job and nice looking engine too.

Can you give the specs of the fans as far as the CFM and diameter of each and which fans you got.

The fans are 14" hayden fans I got from kragans. I think the cfm rating is 1250 cfm in free air each (2500cfm total). Whatever the real number is, it's plenty for me. The temps only rose about 10 degrees over normal (normal = 190) going over the grapevine in the summertime upper 90's with the truck fully loaded with gear for the week. Most other times it never gets above 190 degrees with a 195 degree thermostat.

The shroud is a flat piece of ~28" x 16" x 1/8" aluminum sheet I bought from a metal dealer locally. I cut it down to size using a table saw with a carbide hardwood bit and 2-3 passes.

I used a router with a home made circle cutter to cut the holes out and then bolted the fans down to the sheet.

I then used 1" x 1" aluminum angle stock from Ace Hardware to space the fans 1" away from the radiator and create the plenum. I mitered the corners and used stainless flathead bolts and locknuts to hold everything together. The miters at the corners were plenty accurate to seal it up so I didn't use any sealant or welds to make it airtight. Nothing anyone with a few woodworking tools couldn't do.

The most difficult part (and it wasn't bad) was bending the mounting tabs to mount the shroud to the stock shroud holes. Those are the same 1/8" aluminum sheet cut out and bolted to the shroud and bent a bit to let them sit against the radiator mounts.

All in all, it was a 1 day project if you don't count the wiring. Easy as pie?! ;)
