First magazine article i\'ve seen in a few years....

....that made me want to buy the mag.

The mag was 4wor

The article was about mounting a winch btwn the frame rails and under the radiator on a K30...exactly what I want to do with my K5. Might be tighter, but I bought the mag anyways..

Anyway, just wanted to share.

Seems I did the same here to be able to save space and departure angle!

Re: First magazine article i\'ve seen in a few years....

they did it wrong anyway
why do they mount it with the bolts vertical rather then against the bulkhead?
do Warns not work mounted that way?

Re: First magazine article i\'ve seen in a few years....

Are you implying that the bolts are stronger in tension than shear?

Re: First magazine article i\'ve seen in a few years....

the bolts should only stop the winch from falling on the ground
the load tension should be pulling the mounts into the bulkhead
I cant find a picture that shows the bolts on mine, the welding flash I took isnt helping
I have a 1/2 plate welded across the back of the frame rails
it is drilled for the mount and opened up for the fairlead
the bolts are not involved in the work

Re: First magazine article i\'ve seen in a few years....

Ahh. So build the crossmember in front of the winch, bolt the winch to it, and when the cable pulls, it will pull the winch forward into said crossmember.

Like this:

-Winch/bolts-
------------- Crossmember
===================== front bumper

As opposed to

-----------Crossmember
-Winch-
=================Front bumper

I understand now /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: First magazine article i\'ve seen in a few years....

What? Youve got to be off your rocker. You want the winch to move into a crossmember while you're pulling?

I want my winch to be hard mounted...If there's a safety catch in there in case the bolts break, then ok...but I don't really see that as nessessary. And 1/2" plate? Why? The frame rails are much much thinner and would bend first....I'd personally rather bend my plate. I'd think that 5/16" or at the extreme end, 3/8" with a formed bend to make it like a channel would be plenty!
