Hey all,

So, Ive got this wrecked M1009 in the driveway that isn't selling. And Ive been shopping around for a full convertible blazer or jimmy to replace it.

So Ive started wondering, If I'm gonna swap the diesel engine into the older style rig, what should I strip and keep from the M1009?

-Engine (obviously)
-Fuel filter assembly (probably switch to a spin on filter setup)
-Hydroboost brake system (would that just be the power steering pump and master cylinder?)
-Glowplug relay.

Anything else?

Also, Im going with a rig that came from the factory with the SM465, anyone have the part numbers for the parts ill need (flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, etc.)

You pretty much listed what you'll need, I guess it kinda falls under motor but keep the starter too. And the hydro boost set up is just the pump and the set up that the master cylinder attaches to.

As for the flywheel there's one on ebay now for 186 bucks. And the clutch and pressure plate set up, I went with a hays super truck clutch, you can find it through jegs. Its heavy duty but wont break your leg trying to press the clutch in.

I think it sounds like a cool idea. Other that the diesel not too far off from what a few of us have done. You could easily grab a 465/205 and mate it to the 6.2.

The 2nd gen springs won't work on a first gen without moving the hangers/getting Kert's B52 kit. The first gen springs are ~42" long and the newer springs are quite a bit longer for the fronts. The rears may work but I'm not sure.

Let us know what you go with.

Another though of things to keep would be the fuel return lines off the frame. Dunno if the 1st gen would have those already there or not.

I'd keep the fuel tank too,the sending unit on diesels have the water in fuel light sensor and a extra nipple for the siphon hoses, to drain the water out that have the little shut-off valves near the forward rear spring hanger...and the fuel filter housing too..I would keep the whole engine wire harness intact too...the dual battery trays, and the radiator, radiator support peice that holds the shroud and radiator in,and the shroud too...might not be a bolt in deal, but can be modified to fit probably...the hydrobooster pedal setup may be different,I'd keep the pedal and pushrod...would be best not to scrap the donor till the other truck is 100% "finished" too,in case we've forgot something important !..

Shiny, thanks guys. Didn't even think about the return fuel lines. The starters gonna need to be replaced anyway, as the M1009 uses the 24v system, and the replacement truck will be a 12v system.

as to buying a sm465/205 and clutch assemblies, Im gonna be looking for a truck that already has all that from the factory. So ill just need the specific parts to join the 6.2 to the existing sm465.

Z71paramedic, thanks much for the B52 idea, I hadn't even thought about that.

The radiator out of the n.b.s is much wider and much taller compared to the 1st gen. I've been using my original radiator outta my 68 and have never had a cooling problem.

When I did mine, I found the hydro boost the stock mount can be made to work but you'll have to make a simple adapter plate. And then the rod that comes off the brake pedal to go into the hydro boost set up, I just cut the stock eye off then threaded the shaft and used the end piece off a vacuum style power boost setup.

diesel4me - excellent point, I didn't even think about the sending unit, my tank already rusted out and dumped its fuel, I had never read about the water drain on the tank, and let it sit for a few years, yeah, ya live ya learn.

As to the rest of the stuff, Ill add it to the list. Im gonna try to remove more than I'll need, because Mom and Pop gave me the altimadum that I can buy my next truck, but at that point I'll have a month to get the M1009 out of the driveway and gone. So parts will need to be removed and stored until I get everything setup to do the swap.

Orange Bomber - I never had an issue with my diesel producing alot of heat, and figured I'd just upgrade to an electric fan anyway to pull more air to help control that. My existing radiator is leaking but can probably be fixed. but good to know I can use the original without needing to modify anything major like the radiator supports.

And looks like Im also keeping the hydroboost brake pedal assembly and rod.

-Hydroboost brake system (would that just be the power steering pump and master cylinder?)

You'll want the hydroboost itself, that is attached to the master cylinder.

Also include the brake pedal, as the connection point for hydroboost is at a different spot than vacuum. You could measure and drill, but if you've got the donor, just grab the pedal assembly.

I wouldn't bother saving the glow plug control stuff. Your M1009 being the goofy 24/12v setup I'd skip it entirely and find the stuff for a normal civilian 12v or do a manual control setup.
