First start after installing the 465 - NASTY NOISE!

I used an old input shaft to align the assembly... and the tranny seemed to me to engage the disc and TB right away, and only fought a little with the pilot bearing.

And looks like the link isn't working... /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

what about the trans to trancase coupler, did you give it some grease?
did you use gaskets or RTV between adapter and cases?

if you don't have the clutch linkage set up yet with any tension holding the throwout bearing the fork and bearing could be rattling and make that noise. Another thing that will do it is if you have the clutch disc in backwards.

Mike, the coupler sleeve is brand new as I supplied him a brand new sleeve as part of the trade.

that is a good thing, and I saw pic of the tranny output shaft and it looked good, but I still think they need a good shot of grease to stay looking good.
it is only a theory but U2SLO was also thinking the same thing as in his experience as well it looks like a lube problem in the couplers killing the tranny output.
I chased an odd noise in mine to the coupler being dry assembled.

When you say couplers are you talking about a pilot bearing? I read where it was installed but are there different sizes?

MJ - I used gaskets and RTV on both sides. The coupler I have doesn't have a bearing in it... so I just lubed the surfaces with some gear oil to prevent corrosion... should I have greased it up?

John - The fork is still "floating", and might be chattering... but that is one HELL of a chatter if that is the case!
/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif And I only checked to be sure that the disc was in right something like 5 times before installing the BH! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Jim - The coupler is the sleeve between the tranny and the xfer case. Wes gave me a brand new one from gmpartsdirect.com, so at least I know its not loose....

About to go outside and do this now.... Wish me luck! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

UPDATE!!! I bled the system now, and can disengage the clutch. Now I can start her up just fine without the noise. With the clutch depressed, the noise is gone. I found that I can even feather the clutch in and almost release it completely before hearing the noise starting to come back quietly at first, and gets louder as the clutch is released.

I can let the clutch engage 90% before hearing the noise again... so what should I look at now?

Thanks guys... /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Maybe the springs on the clutch disc are hiting the flywheel bolts. Mine does this because the flywheel has been surfaced one to many times. It sounds terible but now that I know what it is I'll live with it till I pull the tranny again. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Nope... no spare parts... sorry to disappoint you! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Currently, I am thinking that the FW to crank bolts may be interferring... I didn't buy specific bolts... I just bought grade 8 stuff... think I can grind the heads of the bolts down???

grease- I was refering to the inside of the coupler and the 465 output shaft wear problem. thinking a shot of grease inside the coupler may solve that issue.
I have 2 worn 465s and dont think you want to join me in that.

the gasket thing is good. I have suspicions that the adapter relief is sized to need gaskets to provide room for the bearing retainer rings.

it isnt clutch related IMO.
as it manifests itself when clutch and flywheel are all still in relation to one another, I have done the clutch springs beating against the flywheel bolts due to flipped disc. clutch engaged quiet, clutch disengaged heck of a racket.
you still have no driveshafts? I would wait to see if the noise is there with DS in.
then I would wonder if the sound is dry coupoler on output shaft or incorrect assembly. not hearing it hard to pinpoint

here is some good news though, eventually it will make itself known to you one way or another
