First "tow" with k5 ?s

Ok so tomorrow i am going with a couple friends from school riding on fourwheelers and dirtbikes...I am pulling 2 dirtbikes my little old honda 80 and my dads 1973ish Yamaha CT175. On a small single axle flat bed trailer. Since i have a transmission leak i bought some trans oil and while i was at it bought some locas (spelling?) transmission fix. Have you guys used this in the past? Feelings about it? One of the guys at oriellys that knows me by name now suggested it for my situation so i figured id give it a try...NOW is there anything i should know before my first tow about how they handle or somthing to make sure i do/dont do? I have ridden in my dads 79' blazer pulling almost the same setup and have pulled my jetski ALOT behind my moms taurus but just making sure i dont do anything i could have prevented...im sorry for the ramble through out this i do it alot:wink1:
 
as light as that load is you wont really notice it is there.
 
I noticed that one my way from my dads where i keep them to my moms in town lol But i was on like empty and after i filled it up and the dirtbikes up i oculd tell a tid bit difference not much tho
 
We used to have an older 21 foot camper trailer, which tipped the scales at 5400 lbs with our junk loaded in it. I probably logged close to 5000 miles towing that with my old 81 Jimmy. 350, SM 465, 3.73's and 35" tires with a 4" lift.

It was fine, although you definitely notice that weight. I was using a weight distributing hitch and electric brakes...and made certain I had the crucial minimum 10% tongue wieght. I never had any sway or handling issues ever.

Don't know what year your blazer is. But any time I tow any thing I tow in 3rd gear, not over drive. Learned that lesson years ago. Like warwgn said, "it will pull just fine" :waytogo:
 
Mines a 1985 Jimmy with a 305 slightly modified and a 700R4 I was gonna stay in overdrive cause almost half the way there is a 4 lane highway with i think 65mph speed limit then when we get on the backroads was gonna put in normal drive.
 
Just keep it in drive...towing in OD is a 700R-4 killer.

The OD apply piston isn't big enough. Thus, the 2/OD band doesn't clamp hard enough on the drum. I'm not sure how big of a concern it is here though, it sounds like your only talking about maybe 3000 lbs. We had a lot of 1/2 tons with the 700 over the years and none of our roofers listened to us when we told them not to tow in OD. We had very few issues over the years that could have been related to overloading the band, but we never put more than about 3k lbs behind them. Personally, I pulled my deckover with 4 utility atvs and a few hundred pounds of firewood in the bed about 2000 miles a year with my stock 4l60e. It lived until 164k and it was the clutch pack that blew up. The drum didn't even have any abnormal dishing.

I won't run the stop leak stuff in anything of mine. It breaks down seals, and especially in an auto tranny, I feel it's a good way to spend money on an overhaul sooner.

If you're gonna tow much with that truck, I'd recommend upgrading the servos (what I was talking about above). It's about a 30 minute job with a couple common tools. You don't even have to drop the pan. A lot of guys run corvette servos, but the TCI ones are going to get you much more clamping force on the band. I wouldn't recommend Jet ones as the ones I originally got from summit were machined very poorly. 2nd and OD apply the same band but use different servos. Best setup would be to replace both at once, since you have to pull them both out to replace either one. I did a write up on it a while back on bgreens board. I'll see if I can find it for you.

that's why I am dropping the 4L80E in my burban, I can tow what ever I want in OD and it wont matter!

You will be on the hwy for 10 miles and you are worried about which gear you will be in?
I though you were talking about a few hundred miles or worse, thousands of miles.:haha:
If you keep it in D you will have slightly higher RPMs for 10 minutes, big deal, and if you keep it in OD, it will not have enough time to build up too much heat to do any damage.

Sorry bout that:haha: I just got back from dropping the bikes off at my dads i kept it in D just to be safe. Had a great time altho i wish i couldve hit the mud we were goin thru on the fourwheelers and my dbikes with my truck:rolleyes:
