Fixer upper 8274?

Go for it, there's nothing wrong with it. Clean the rust off of the drum and brake, change the oil in it (Warn claims its good for a lifetime but the oil in mine was really bad after 25 years), put some synthetic rope on it and buy one of these to control it.

I have that in dash winch control in my buggy and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I would buy it! They are super easy to work on and all the major parts are there. A light guage extension cord makes a very nice wire for the control and the plugs can be found at most marine supply stores. There is a very good tech article on Pirate that will help you get it in tip top shape.

imma fight u on this one :D

me presonally i dont like in cab controls cause i wheel with a stick (as well as 383 :wink1:) and i like to keep the remote in one hand while i have one or both on the wheel.in cabs are nice but just not for me.to each theyre own though

ps what size rope are u guys running and length?that rope is expensive

Mine's a stick too ;)

I hated dealing with the stock control (especially after it started shorting out).

Will this one free spool?
Yes they do free spool, the actuator is just above the brake and is very hard to see in the picture they have there. You can see it, it is a small round knob that sticks out. These winces are fast enough that free spooling isn't always necessary, at least in my experience.

You should have just posted the pic and not the link since a few of us might be looking for a winch as well. :D

Warning, incoming Newb question: So what makes these winches so much better? Is it the style, parts, engineering? Just wondering. :)

What a total noob! Duh.

Um, I'd like to know too.:D Everyone seems to have great things to say even though is an 8K rating.

the 8k rating is very conservative. Works well on a fullsize. The 8274 holds 150 ft of wire rope while all others hold around 100ft. Its VERY fast as well, probably the fastest winch ive seen in person.

Yeah, by all accounts, fast, over-engineered, and reliable.

That said, I see them on Craigslist on and off for ~$200-250, so it's not like that one is all that cheap, especially by the times it's shipped.

I can't find a winch for anything less than $400-$500 around here. If someone else wants the winch they can't go for it. Won't hurt my feelings.

EDIT: Nevermind its sold. PISS...

What the differance between a M8000 and an 8274?

Short answer: Totally different winches.

The Mxxxx are a newer style of winch, design by Warn proper.

The 8274 descends from a line of winches made by another company, Bellevue or Belleview or somesuch -- that Warn bought out in maybe the mid-70's. You'll also see the 5687, I think it was, which is an 8274 that only power in (out is only freespool) or somesuch.

These came as a dealer option on IH Scouts or Jeep Wagoneers or something, so sometimes they sell for stupid money to the restoration crowd.

You'll also see these oldeer winches listed as "Warn 6000" or "Warn 8000", so the dead giveaway is a pic. No other winch looks like the 8274 and its brethren.

If you do a bit of googling, you'll find some Land Rover nuts in south Africa somewhere who have info and sell kits to upgrade 8274's; you can use the motors from the newer Warns for crazy speed and power, and IIRC there's a dual-motor mod as well. IIRC it's aimed at the Dakar Rally sort of crowd... unless you're doing serious Marlin Perkins stuff in the Kalahari, prolly not worth the $$. But cool :deal:

Damn. Maybe I should start picking up the 8274's and reselling them...

Maybe you should pick one up and send it to me. Really! So is a M8000 a good solid winch? Pros/Cons? I found one near my house for 425 and I am wondering if I should go for it.

Mind a small hijac fellas. Does anyone know or has anyone seen an 8274 stuck in the mount of a DIY bumpercenter on a first gen blazer without cutting up that damn expensive grill?
