Flames are no good!

I'm trying to get my truck to start (which it will...) and when it does, you have to have your foot to the floor and then it starts backfiring and shooting flames out of the headers. I just rebuilt this engine. I know the dist isn't out 180 degrees. There is so much raw fuel in there that after I shut it off the flame continues to burn for a few seconds. HELP!

timing is way retarded, advance it a bit while idling, shut it off and see if it restarts...get it to the point to where it idles right and will restart without backfiring, then tune it with a vac gauge

Agree with the Timing replies.

However, I think you're giving Fire a bad name. Fire is ALWAYS good, unless it is burning you personally.

I had this problem while test starting my engine. I had forgotten to hook up the electric choke wire. Once the engine was warm it would die. I would hold it to the floor and crank. All that was doing was filling my headers with gas. Once it would fire...WOOSH! Kinda scary when the tranny cover floorpan is off and you have a 5 gal can of gas on the passenger floorboard (long story, it had no fuel tank yet).

When you put the timing chain on where both dots facing each other or both up? Facing each other is 180degrees out.

Your 180 degrees out or you have the firing order wrong.
