Flat back diff covers

mmm... creamy

Brian, since your axle is apart there is an area on the bottom of the casting that can be drilled and tapped for a drain plug. I was going to mention it to you when we had it at my shop. Just drill and tap it for 1/2" NPT and use an allen plug in it.

You don't think it'd get damaged down there? I guess a flush plug would do ok. I'll have to look at it.

That's why i said to use an allen plug. The deeper you tap the hole the farther the plug will go so you can play with it until you make the plug flush with the casting.

To be honest though, there is really no reason for a drain plug unless you want to drain the gear oil and fill with fresh without pulling the cover. I think it's just as easy to pull the cover and inspect the gears and carrier then seal it up and add oil.

My reason is for changing the oil and for draining before the cover comes off. I can't seem to NOT spill a bunch of the stuff all over the place when I crack the cover open.

Either location would work, but it might be nice to have Kert do it on the cover instead of me even if it's a few bucks more.

Less garage time = happy wife :)

You just aren't pulling the cover correctly if you can't do it without getting oil all over the place.

I spill oil while draining from the drain plug on my vw so I don't think there's hope for me to ever learn how to do it right. It's just my destiny to make a mess.

Adding drains or filling plugs is an option. Call me and we'll set it up.

Gona be pretty tough to get any new diff covers done in the near future. R and D is totally jammed.
