flat top knuckle??s

Okay I have a 10 bolt in the front of my burb. Its out of a 85 Jimmy. I want to do crossover steering, and know I need a flat top knuckle. I found one. Its on a 74 dana 44 axle. I noticed the tie rods are mounted on top instead of on the bottom, so if I get both knuckles and tir rods and center bar am I good, or do I need the spidles and all the outers?

unless it is a first desing 44 u should be fine .

You don't want to use the spindles because they will be the old smaller bearing type.

You will need to use the '74 tie rod because if you use the 10 bolt tie rod, the bottoms of the leaf springs will hit the tie rod and won't allow the turning because of binding when rubbing the tie rod.

'76 was the last year for flat top knuckles. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Anything '77 and newer will have no provisions for flat tops.

Cant you just put the newer style spindle on the flat top knuckles? Or is there a difference in bolt pattern?

I'm pretty sure they're all the same spindle bolt pattern.

No differences on the spindles except for the bearing size. Either spindle will work with the other knuckle.

I found a J20 with flattops, any difference between the jeep 44 and the gm 44 knuckles? Someone is hording all the good parts at the junkyard so I am forced to look at heaps! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Okay so the 74 knuckles will bolt right up to my 10 bolt? And I can use everything else from my 10 bolt?

I don't know about the one you got but My Jeep front D44 has the axle over the springs and the axle width is 4" narrower than the blazer.
Mine is the wagoneer, the J20 might be a little wider but check it to make sure.

correct me if i am wrong, but you can use just the knuckles....
and i would use bothe the knuckles off the 74, and i would use the tie rod as well.

you will need both knuckles AND the tie rods. the later spindles (76 up) use larger wheel bearings, so you will reuse your spindles. The flat top design stopped in 76. I don't know about jeeps, but I "heard" dodge d44's would work.
