Hey all,
I got a 76 K20 and wanting to get rid of the sheetmetal bed and fab my own flatbed. I want it be able to have the flatbed make room for flex and larger tires and get rid of some of the weight from the sheet metal. I know plenty out there have done it, but I dont know how to start, but if anyone has any plans or i just havent looked hard enough for someones build thread, I would like to see it and get a start on a summer project here :D .

I cant post pics today!!!!! New member???? I will try again tomorrow. If you go to my profile you can take a look.

You need more than 15 posts to put up a picture.

you can post pics, but you have to first load them to a web hosting site like photobucket or something. when you post there is an option to insert an image, and asks for the URL. copy and paste the web address for the photo into the bar that pops up when you click insert image, and it will automatically put it in your post.

becoming a member allows you to upload images to ck5.com, and you can put pictures into albums on here, and then use the same method to put them in your posts.

welcome to the forum.

The frame "rails" are 5" channel the frame is 2x3 and the cross members are 2 1/2" metal studs. Hope this helps.

Hahahaha nice follow up on the info.
I can visualize it, but a pic would be great! :wink1:
Number one I'm guessing is to keep it elevated off the trucks frame.

Mine so far. Havent gotten too much done recently due to terribly timed weather and other excuses :doah:

Its constructed of 2x3 box tubing.

'83 K20 that I had for awhile. Inherited from gramps. He bought it new as a regular longbed K20. We swapped the flatbed on sometime in the mid '90s. If I remember correctly, it came from a toyota "1ton" flat bed.:haha:

Stomis, That is a sweet fab job. What are you going to cover the top with? Diamond plate? Are you going to leave it open?

Hey thanks for the compliments. Its really my first adventure with fab and metal work since I got my new welder. I really enjoy doing it.

I plan on decking it with composite decking painted to match the tan of the truck. Its also gonna get my tool boxes that I custom fit and bolted together for the old wood flatbed I had. It should lay that the toolboxes are as wide as the bed providing the frame of the flatbed as sorta a tree/rock slider as to not dent the tool boxes.

Here an old shot of my truck with the wood and boxes. I'm not sure if its in the picture but I custom fit a regular across the back of the bed/cab toolbox to fit between the two of them.
