hey guys I am going to be changing out the flex plate in my blazer soon, because i have a dead spot on it and the starter wont catch every once in a while. This is the first time i have ever attempted to do something like this. I have access to a transimission jack and i think i have the tools needed to do the job. So my question is do i have to buy anything else besides the flexplate? I do have a couple longer bolts that i am going to use to help keep the transmission and the engine block aligned when i slide the transmission back. Any tips, tricks or comments will be appreciated.

I always use longer bolts at the outer parts of the bell above the dowel pins.

Unbolt everything and just slide the trans transfer combo back with a floor jack.

I would not recommend using long bolts as a guide. The weight of the trans and t-case combo is enough to break the bellhousing should the jack slip or you forget to let the jack down as you're moving it backwards.

I have done it that way more than once....the key whenever removong a trans is to be careful and NOT let the jack slip.

I just did it about 2 months ago.

First I took a nylon ratchet strap and ran it from one side of the frame to the other, positioning it under the oil pan to keep the motor from dropping when I disconnect the tranny. then I put one jack under the tranny pan and one under the 203 case (heavy). remove the bolts that hold the tcase crossmember. unbolted both shafts from the t-case. then I removed the converter cover and torque bars. Next unbolt the converter.
then Unbolt the tranny bellhousing.disconnect all linkage. you then should be able to slide the tranny/t-case back about 3"-4", which is all I needed myself. Of course check your wires and tranny cooling lines for enough play. unbolt your old flexplate. install new one . re-install tranny.
