Go electric.

Or box and brace your frame.

Motor mounts, and/or body mounts/bushings.

How little is a "little flex". If its actually the frame flexing, it should take a LOT of flex before those 2 collide.

I WAS JUST GONNA POST THE SAME PROBLEM!

When I got my burb the bottom fan shroud was all busted up, figured it was just old brittle plastic that had cracked. This past summer finally got around to ordering a new lower shroud and sticking it in there, now I know why the original was all busted!

Anytime one of my front wheels goes up an incline before the other the flex in the truck frame closes the small clearance bewteen the fan and the lower shroud and tick-tick-Tick-Tick- Tick!! It is actually pretty loud and embarrassing.

Is this a common known problem?? I've got new engine mounts, new radiator support frame mounts, but the front clip is pretty shot...since the shroud mounts to the top of the front clip...I'm assuming the front clip/quarter panel movement is what is making the problem...but is is all based on the frame. So the frame must be flexing pretty good.

I was thinking I would make a spacer out of wood to lower the bottom-half of the fan shroud a little. I guess I could go electric. I've never done that before in any of my vehicles....is there an electric solution that is best for the $?

this is the picture right before it happend on that little of incline..

like yeah it shouldnt rub on that lil bit..

for me.. my front clip came off of a truck with a BB... (1987).... and having a SB in it... the fan doesnt sit in the shroud... i was told due to motor mount placement or something... this is the reason... so ya have to watch your fingers when you have it running and your under the hood...

no overheating problems...

naw man not that i have seen but that was the only day i got to take it out and play in it while i was home on r and r..:( but my wife drives it and says everything is good just the oil pressure drops everynow and then... would it affect anything if i just take the shroud out???

I havent had a shroud forever. I have a 2" body lift. It gets 110*+ around here and never overheated. But you should have one.

it'll run hotter, yes the shroud works that well.

I had issues with another truck i had running hot without the shroud on it, always got hotter the longer i drove it on eht freeways too, idling, it'll heat up too.

Leave the shroud on and just be aware of the problem until you get those mounts replaced.

I mentioned the motor mounts as i have had the same issue in my Burb, slightest little twist, and i mean street curb height, would let the fan start rubbing the lower part of the shroud. Checked and saw flat motor mounts, replaced them and doesn't do it anymore.

Great thanks a bunch i am just going to replace the motor mounts and body mounts and see where that leaves me at. thanks again.

i find this hard to believe, sorry, i lived in Phoenix with the same temps and had a heck of a time trying to keep the 350 i had in my dually down to a modest temp, i know 200 isn't technically that hot, but when you're running a 180 t-stat with a big radiator, it shouldn't be running that hot, and then it would climb to an eventual 230-240 with a steady cruising speed on the freeway of about 65mph.

As soon as i installed a shroud i had laying around, it kept it right at about 185-190.

sweet well i want it to stay as cool as possable. so i think i am going to stay with the shroud and run a flex fan cause it bent one of my blades just slighly but it happens thanks again for the advise

dont run a flex fan. they explode.

I had one that the blades came apart at about 4500rpms. shattered my fan shroud and sent peices into my radiator.

Just go to the junkyard and get a stock replacement clutch fan, or go electric

I also had overheating problems with the burb a few years back too because i wasn't running a shroud. trying to leave Cali, climbing up the hills leaving Indio, CA. i was forced to run with full heater on to try to help with overheating. the motor was climbing up and near the 250 mark the longer i went. Of course i was pulling a trailer with some a dually bed on it, but still, had to slow down to a 30mph crawl, go easy on the throttle in thehopes of not blowing anything up. I made it, but from then on out, i noticed around city driving i would get some valvetrain clatter when alittle harder on the throttle.

I didn't have the shroud on this time, because i had recently installed a 4 core radiator, i hadn't gotten around to modifying the one i had to fit right. After this trip, i did that week though, modify it and install it.

No cooing issues to this date with it, actually NOW i am having issues with it running TOO cold, i have the truck setup for heavy duty cooling with a 4 row radiator, heavy duty fan clutch and it takes forever to get to t-stat rating, and then when it does open, it cools it down a ton.

I tried running electric fans in the past on other vehicles, and even the Burb once, i personally was never too fond of it in the truck application though, there are times i tend to work the engines like they're supposed to be worked in a truck, and really, IMO, the engine driven fan works the best for it.

and yeah, i HATED those flex fans, ran a few of them, not for very long though.

hey guys thanks abunch i just have a had a problem with the cluch in the stock fans before so thats why i said flex fan but ok i will do alittle junk yard diving for a heavy duty one and get the mounts fix...:D
