flexplate cracked again.

Its either me or just my luck when it comes to transmissions.
Anyways, my flexplate on my 1978 gmc th350 cracked again. this is the second time. the first time was about a year ago, which was a few months after I got it. What the heck ?

Maybe I might just go standard one day :rolleyes:
 
I would say that it is time to check the starter, maybe it needs shimming. It may also be a bad torque converter, but I would think that would show in other ways. I think the starter may not be engaging squarely and it is putting pressure on the plate. This would slowly cause a crack, or maybe not so slowly. If it is hitting the flexplate solidly before engaging it could cause this.

I also know that I haven't seen this happen with any other make than GM, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen to others. You may also want to check your balancer to see if it is worn out and causing a bit more vibration to be transferred into the flexplate.

Just some ideas.
 
Interesting,its pretty typical on early Dodge PU`s with the Cummins but Ive never heard it as an issue with SBC`s. Are you using a OE Chevy flexplate?

I had a 302 for and when I swaped a different 302 into it I kept breaking flexplates. It turned out that when I pulled the first 302 one dowell pin stuck in the trany and the other in the block and when I put the other 302 in there were no pins in it. Long story short when I started to hammer on the truck the motor and trany tried to twist away from each other resulting in broken flexplates. installed missing dowell pin solved all my flexplate problems.
 
not sure about oe flexplate. the one i put on back in febuary of last year came from my corvette. the one I am installing tomorrow will be from the store :D
