Swapping from 465 to th400 and I need to pick up a flexplate but I have no idea what I need. My engine is a full roller gm crate motor(2000ish). When I got my last new flywheel I had to get one for an 88-90ish year truck iirc. Now I'm putting a th400 out of an early 90s truck in. Do I need internal or external balanced? Are some flexplate better than others? How many teeth do I need? Going to go with a Hughes converter.

External balance, 168 tooth, 1 piece rear main seal , make sure it has the wide bolt pattern for either a 400 or 4L80E and you should be good.

Summit and Jets has some good pricing on SFI approved flexplates.
SFI is usually beefier than just a non-SFI flexplate
SFI loosely means race approved, you can google it for more info.
Yes, quality and beef varies between flexlplates.
Get a good flexplate since it is not a fun part to replace like a fan belt.
I have had good experience with the Summit Racing brand SFI flexplates for many vehicles in the past 25yrs. They are around $50-60.

I know this one isn't SFI approved but Im just curious if this is what Im looking for. The SFI approved version of this one is back ordered. It has converter bolt spacing of 10.75" and also 11.5" I see that it is for 6 pad converter but I don't get how it has 2 different spacing patterns. Am I missing something?? I plan on using a Hughes GM5TOW converter

That one is for a small block or late 4.3. If you are getting a converter from Hughes you could ask if they have one, they sell flexplates.

1991-2000 Model 7.4 , ATP part number Z231, Pioneer part number FRA321, Pioneer also lists one for the GenV and GenVI crate engine as part number FRA111HD35

It makes me sad when someone swaps an auto in place of a 4 speed!

Other than that, Greg has it under control.

another good thing to get to go with an SFI rated flexplate, is a Mini High Torque starter motor. Jegs and Summit both sell the PowerMaster brand at a decent price. The old style OEM GM starters are not good staters because they are not "gear reduction" style starters, but the Mini High Torque's are.

About a year ago I bought and installed a Jegs "in house" brand of SFI rated/168 tooth/ externaly balanced flexplate, and a PowerMaster Mini High Torque starter to go with it, for my Big block 454/TH-400, and it kicks ass.

Don't be too sad. I'm just making it so that I can switch back and forth. Clutch pedal, linkage, and manual column will all be staying in place for quick swaps.

Just tired of the 4 speed. The roads where I live are windy and hilly so it becomes annoying because I'm always having to wind out the motor and the noise it makes is just too much. It's my DD so I'm trying to make it easier and more comfortable to be drive. Mostly though the 4 speed feels and sounds like it's gonna bite the dust any day now.
