Thanks Stein, looks aren't too important to me (although I think she's dead sexy just the way she is), I'm a function over form guy, but with no top and no hood I get a fair amount of muck flung up from the front tires. It would be more for protection of me and the engine than looks. I'm wanting to get a cover for the whole thing because it sits outside and also some sort of boat cover or something that I can install over the cage. Trouble is those are expensive and I go through/over/in between a lot of trees and I don't want to destroy it. I used a tarp one year when it was raining but the damn thing kept pooling water in the low spots and then dumping over the edge and soaking us. I'll figure out something!
At least for over the cage you should be able to get a real duck canvas top from Tractor Supply or similar that would be about the right size. That way you can ratchet it down tight without really fearing damaging it. Couple of holes, eyebolts and some cheap turnbuckles would allow for some pretty good tensioning that shouldn't back off. Getting it drum-tight would help with the pooling. Fold or roll back the corners that cover the side window area when driving and roll down and bungie those corners when parked.
Or find a way to make it have some sort of bump in the center, where it wouldnt have the chance to pool up at all, using the canvas would be a great idea for that.
Great idea guys, local farm & home has a duck canvas tarp that is 5'x7' that should work perfect. As far a the bump, it would have to be really high in the center to keep the water from pooling. My last tarp was 4'x6' so this bigger tarp should extend far enough to keep the water off of us.
If you really want to get creative without much cost run a 2x4 or a tube down the center front to back, clamp it on with some u-bolts and run the canvas over the top like a tent. Would eliminate the pooling. When you don't want the tarp just take off the other piece as well for aesthetics.
