So, going through a couple of websites, I see that there are a few options for replacing the front floors in my K5. One of them is a cut out replacement, and it seems that the other kind is a drop in. Is either one better than the other? I have a welder so I have the capability to cut the bad stuff out and weld new ones in. I was just curious if one is easier or better than the other.

For reference:

The cover panel:

The "repair" panel":

Any input? :dunno:

Most people will say pull the old panel up to make sure how far the rust went through. I did the cover up and figured I'd see how long that lasted. 10 years now and hasn't rotted back through yet. Depends on your quality standards. I figured it was easier to just use what I have in place for more floor support. I have since replaced the rockers and metal around that floor piece. Kind of up to you on how much work you want to do.

Well I've patched it with rivets once before, so to be honest it probably could use all new metal. But it is pretty solid right now in all honesty, its just now that I have the welder I would like to get something on there to seal it a little better

I welded mine in and then used auto motive seal caulking to make sure it was watertight around the full edge where I welded it. Worked good. In your case it already has one repair on it already. Might be time for full replacement.then you can see how far the rust spread.
