I don't know if this is the right place or not but I am looking for some input on a floor shifter that I am 95% sure I'm going to buy. I'm looking at the B&M Unimatic shifter. Does anyone have any experience with it? How does it look and feel in a K5? does the reverse lockout work well (I know it's not a true reverse lock out)? Will it shift all the way to park when the shifter is pushed in? Or will it stop at reverse and then have to be let back to "normal" position to hit park? If not, can it be modified to stop at park? If it goes all the way to park that could eat up a few valuable seconds trying to find reverse that could save my rig and even my life if I have to get to reverse quickly in a sticky situation. Also, back up lights, any suggestions on how to wire them to work, or am I stuck using a toggle switch on my dashboard? That’s currently how they work because I couldn't figure out the wiring for the 88' steering column I put in my 73'.

I had a B&M Mega shifter in my old 76' pickup and it was cool, though it sounds like you need a security system rather then a shifter.

maybe some colt 1911's? a doberman? and you can modify the shifter, just have to take away the release for the reverse lockout. but keep in mind something willhave to be put there so it doesnt slip into reverse

I was going to get a ratchet shifter like the mega shifter or quick silver (they are really cool), but it's not practical for off road use. If you need to hit reverse in a hurry you have to ratchet through the gears and pull the reverse lockout lever. That's too much time if you start rolling over and need to back in a few short seconds. I have a roll cage, but I really don’t want to use it. With the Unimatic you push the shifter down and throw it forward and it goes through all the gears and I'm hoping it stops in reverse. That's way more practical for me. If it goes all the way into park I'm assuming I can get a piece of 1/4 inch aluminum, cut it and bolt it so it stops the shifter at Reverse. At least that's the idea I have rolling around in my head. I just want to know if that is possible and to see if anyone has any experience with this particular shifter.

As for security, I've got a Mossberg 500a Cruiser. But I have been kicking around the idea of picking up a 1911 for concealed carry. Wilson combat or Kimber. I need to convince the wife that we need another gun first.

i had a b&m light truck mega shifter and it was o.k. but had to pull up to get past nuetral and it would go past reverse to park.

quality was kind of lax on it this was 7-8 years ago. seemd like china junk to me.

i now have a lokar and love it a lot more . push button center and its great quality over the b&m unit was .

look in to them. i will say the one i have goes past reverse to park. but if forward will stop at nuetral till button pushed in center of know with thumb.

search my screen name and lokar for info i have posted and cheepest place i have found to buy them from. good luck and if you need more just ask.

A little off topic, but get your wife a small revolver or semi- auto pistol she can control, then get it in her favor color so she can put it in her purse, and say " this is for your safety and in case you have to be in a conflict" prove to her its necessary and then get her a diamond or something, shmooze and then you shall recieve lol

SweetK30- I'll have to look into Lokar shifters more. Don't you have to pull the tranny out in order to install them? I remember reading that somewhere. That could be wrong and I was avoiding them for that reason. But I have heard good things about them. Thanks for the info!

RippedK5- That's not a bad idea. I've come to the conclusion that's it's not my hobbies that are expensive, it's my wife!!

lokar makes floor mount / trans mount and even cable conversion of stock gm on the steering to drop linkage and make it a cable.

if 4x4 with removable floor hump dont need to drop to mount the on tranny style. but if on tranny style and no top hole then drop it yes.

mine i was able to adjust mount to fit up threw the stock 4 speed shifter hole and boot when i went auto on the truck. fools a lot of people thinking its stick shift :haha:

and as for floor mount just hole for cable then bolt on bracket below and adjust and go drive it.

i have a cable conversion to install of theres here soon on my 2wd build as i swaped in a 03 5.3 and 4l60e and set it back 1.25" from stock so no stock linkage would work easy . will have pics of that when done.
