I have an 89 K5 GMC Jimmy. I blew up the 700R4 so I found another 700R4 out of an 83 K5 with a NP208 Trans case to put in it. The flywheel cover was missing on the 83 tranny and mine doesn't match up. I can drill holes in my cover but what size are the bolts for the cover on the 83? I figured flywheel covers on 700's would be interchangeable but I guess not! Thanks for your help.

All 4WD trans inspection covers are aluminum and held on with six 10mm x 1.5 bolts. If the trans is a 2WD the cover is a stamped steel cover and held on with four sheet metal screws.

So they must have converted a 2 wheel drive 700 to 4 wheel drive? Because it has only 4 holes, 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom. Thanks for your reply! The shifter locations are the same on all 700R4's right? So my 4 low/4 high will be in the same locations?

The t-case shifter has nothing to do with the trans. The real only difference between a 2WD and 4WD transmission case is what i had described and also the output shaft is different. I don't think there is enough "meat" on the 2WD trans case to drill and tap for the six bolts for the aluminum inspection cover.

Even with 4wd's they don't interchange all years . There is a seperate number for not only 4wd and 2wd , there is a seperate part number for once oiece main smallblocks and two piece main smallblocks .

You try tightening the two piece main motor converter cover up to a one piece main motor and 700 , and you will crack the cover since it hits the pan rails and corner studs in the rear of the motor .

Thanks for your responses, I really appreciate it. This lil swap turned out to have more "little ****" than I figured. I saw another thread about some 700r4's not working with different trucks as far as the wiring and the converter not locking up. I just hope this one works for me. I'm ready to go to a sm465 and be done with it ha ha. You wouldn't happen to know what size the 4 screws are by chance would you?
