flywheel damage

SO, I blew a head gasket (or cracked a head) and my truck finally made it's way home on the back of a flatbed tow.

When she went down, I was dumb and tried to start her and drive her off the highway. The motor was hydro-locked and I caused some damage. I cracked the starter and made a mess of my flywheel.

How much flywheel damage is acceptable? I am assuming mine needs to be replaced?

It was too late when I went to take pictures of the starter.

I'd say you need a new flex plate for sure, and to make sure your new set-up engages a bit deeper into the teeth. It appears to have had pretty shallow contact for a long time before this happened. :doah:

excuse me for sounding dumb, but what is a flexplate?

Also, I will be tearing into this thing soon, what shop manual should I get to help me out? I have a Chiltons and the military one. The chiltons sucks and I have not really looked at the military one.

Technicle name, Flexplate is for autmatic, flywheel is for Manual trans.

I would just pull the engine and do the heads on an engine stand.

It's the part your calling a flywheel when you don't have a flywheel on your truck ;)

For a manual, the military manuals probably have better information than the generic chiltons. Pulling the motor to do the repairs would definitly make things easier at this point. Plus it will allow you to inspect the block and crankshaft for cracks.

It must be me dreaming that I have a NV4500. I have been driving my buddies F250 with a 4-speed. I miss manual action.

I will have a ton of questions on what lies ahead, so i will start a new thread.

i snapped my starter the same way and thought it was hydro locked. turned out it was a broken rod jammed in the crank. you can't hear a lot over the diesel rattle, so be prepared :(

Last time I couldn't turn a 6.2L over with the starter it was a snapped crank and cracked block :doah:
