Flywheel Question

PM'd ryoken and he said he'd have to do some digging to remember, so I figured I'd let anyone who knows chime in here.

I just picked up a 468 BBC yesterday. It is internally balanced because the dude was going to run it in a boat. I'm not finding any options for internally balanced 454 flywheels on summit except for $400 aluminum versions and I'm really hoping I don't have to do that... I know normal sbc 400's and bbc 454s are externally balanced, and if I'm reading it correctly that the other sbc's and 396 & 427's are internally balanced. My question is can I take the flywheel that is on my 355 now and run it on this 468? Both are 2 piece rear main blocks. The flywheel I have already is 168 tooth (99% sure). I'd really love to not have to buy a flywheel for this swap, especially a $400 version...

Are sure he didn't mean the motor had been balanced by a machine shop? This is different from being internally or externally balanced.

Nope, definitely internally balanced. Saw the crank, and the guy made sure to remind me I needed an unbalanced flywheel.

Personally, I don't have a clue. What little I know in that area is for Fords.

But, an externally balanced flywheel usually has balance weights cast or attached to it. It would seem to me that the weight could be machined off and the flywheel balanced without too much cost or risk to the integrity of the flywheel.

That was something I had considered. I've read plenty of posts all over the web about internal vs external balanced motors, but none of them have answered my question exactly. They're all talking about interchangeability between small blocks and 396/427's. None have said what to do with a 454 that has been internally balanced...

Used a 307,327,350,366,396,402,427,427t flywheel. Just get the right diameter for your starter.

So if I pull the flywheel and starter that I have on my 355, I should be good to go on the new motor? If so, that's excellent news

If it truly is internally balanced it will use a internal balance flywheel. Any of those will work.
