Will a flywheel from a 454 work on a 400 sbc , since their both external balance?

no, 454 has more weights for counter balance...But you can rebalance it to work on a 400, would have to add weight theoretically...

Correct. And I believe it would cost more to balance it than to buy the right one

Really depends who you have balance it as prices are different from shop to shop. I had my 454 balanced and built by a local guy. My car is a factory 4-speed, rather hard to find, and uses the 153 tooth flywheel. I could have ordered the correct, 454 153 tooth one, but he balanced the stock one for the 454. He charges $80 I think for balancing, but since he put the motor together, was included in the price.

If its flexplates for automatics, you can buy aftermarket ones now that come with the weights separately,so they will work on all V8's,you just put the correct weight on for whatever engine you have ...for manual trannies you need the specific flywheel for the particular engine...

I was wanting to do a auto to manual swap . My 4sp is ready to go but the 454 needs a rebuild. So Ill just wait till later , hate to have to buy a flywheel for the 400 just to get rid of it later on.
