I don't see the point in buying a new cv axle (260 bucks:eek1:). Is there anyway I can rebuild it? All I need is the two rings that are broke in the pics. Both shafts are good and I have all the bearings. Boots are also good.

Gonna have to change oil in both diffs and probably tranny... 2 days in the creek didn't do it any good. Straight milk.

Wish I would have taken pic of it stuck... Water was 1/8" from getting over the rockers and into the interior. Called my bro up and had him pull me out with his 2x (broke his 4x) 98 jimmy. It took us 1 hour to do what would have been done in 5 minutes if he had 4x. First was the attempted winch out which failed because he was scared of getting stuck and didn't get a good angle on the winch (was just pulling on my sidewalls:rolleyes:) which ended up in him almost rolling his rig. Second attemp failed also as the 2000lb atv winch ran out of balls after getting a decent angle... 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th attemps ended up in success. Used the winch as a tow strap tied to a real tow strap, tied to some rope to yank on it until it came out. He ended up running his 60 dollar kragen winch over and mashing a fender with his 31" mickey T baja claws (too big for stock Jim) but we got her out.

Those definitely come with CV axle shafts. Ask me how I know. I put a HP 44 under mine though. You can replace your CV shafts with normal ujointed D30 shafts out of a 96-01 Jeep Cherokee (not grand cherokee). They have the same size ujoint as a D44 and are a direct replacement. You will still have CV driveshaft though (which isn't awful). I would say swap the whole axle but finding one with 3.73 gears (V8 ZJ) is PITA. And it is still just a D30. It is a good axle for up to 33" tires though.

Looking for some ujointed shafts.

Offtopic question:

What is the rear axle on these? Pumpkin looks bigger then my 10b's

The rear axle for the 97 ZJ with a V8 is a D44A (A as in aluminum center section). It is better than a D35 rear but worse than an iron 44 rear axle. It should hold up just fine in most cases. The rear disc brakes are a nice feature.

You are actually lucky in this case that it is a ZJ with the CV front axle shafts. On a u-jointed axle shaft it's not uncommon for the yokes (ears) to spin around once the u-joint is broke and bind up inside the knuckle which best case only locks up the wheel. Worse case, and I've personally seen this several times, is that it breaks the ball joints knocking the entire wheel assembly off the vehicle. CV's really can't do that, but they do usually break easier than the 297x/760x u-joint.

Best advice is to keep the wheels as straight as possible when down in a rut or between rocks. The more angle in the joint (CV's or standard u-joints) the less total strength they have.

My brother works at LQK and he's telling me he's got ujoint shafts from a 97 grand cherokee and a 93 grand cherokee. Are they swappable?

One thing to remember, if you are going to be crossing streams. If the water is getting really deep, and the truck seems to be moving funny, OPEN THE DOORS!!.
Trust me, its a lot better to get the floors wet than have the darn thing start floating downstream.
It never winds up sinking in a good place....

The simple answer is yes, they will swap. I know the 96 to 01 Cherokee had stronger ujoints than other year Cherokees. The Grand Cherokees may have as well. If you have the chance to compare the 93 and 97 GC ujoints, you should. If not, go with the 97s.

I doubt it. That looks like the bigger ujoint and I believe you will have the smaller shafts, hence, requiring smaller ujoints. If you want to know more about Jeeps ZJs check this, http://www.nagca.com/ . Good luck.

Looks like your right... the ujoints are alot smaller then I thought they'd be.

Got them in tonight.

I did have a leak out of one side though... I'm not sure if it was residual oil left over in the tube from when oil poured out of it or if it's a little overfilled. I put 7 oz of Limited slip treatment in so it's actually 7 oz overfull. Didn't even think about it. Read the tube and it said dump the entire contents in. Didn't say anything about taking the extra 7 oz into consideration.

Should it leak out the axle tube if it's 7 oz over full?

Shouldn't leak from the axle tubes at all, an overfull condition should pump oil out the breather. Not unusual for an broken axle or joint to wipe out the axle seal, but could be a little residual fluid. If the leak persists you will probably need to replace the seal.

Do you install some sort of limited slip diff in the front axle?

That's not too bad. When mine popped on the street it was the pinion bearing. It wasted the ring and pinion and made a big mess. I rebuilt a HPD30 from a Cherokee and swapped it in. The ALD44 is prone to bearing failure too. I'm glad to be rid of that pos.
