Hey everyone. I used to own a 99 Z71 and after graduating college I bought my dream car, a 2002 Camaro SS vert Sunset Orange Metallic. I love the car, got a great deal (only had 9k miles), but I missed my chevy bad. I ended up buying a couple K5s and have finally found one I'm sticking with. Its a 91 and its in great shape. I started to mod it right away, and decided I would love to have a soft top for the rear and remove that heavy fiberglass top. Well, it seems every company that made soft tops for them ( Kayline, STC, Skyler, etc.) went out of business. I know Bestop is making tops still, but they are not really visually appealing and I am told they are halting production on first gen K5s.
Well, I did some research and came upon Can-Back soft tops. They are very well built and look great. They come with many options including light bars, racks for basket racks, etc. They were producing them for a few years with sunbrella fabric, which is used in high end marine applications like bimini tops, etc. Well, as it is in this specific business, it became hard to keep producing with the demand so low, and so they switched to a little cheaper fabric. Then a large fire broke out and detroyed the factory just a short time later. The users on the internet, including some on ck5.com have said that the can-back tops were of such high quality and looked great on their rigs, that even though they were a little pricey, they were worth the investment.
Well, the good news is that as of mid-2007, Can-Back was re-opened under new owner-ship and began production again. They have gone back to the high quality sunbrella fabric, and are working hard to furthur improve the earlier great Can-back design. The frame will be stainless steel, possibly powdercoated. The frame set up will no longer require the 4 holes drilled on the outside of the tailgate, but will substitute a mounting bar on the inside of the tailgate. The stitching has been upgraded to a new polymer with teflon to last decades. Can-backs goal is to make a top that will last 10-20 years, not just 3-5 years. I have been personally in contact with Can-Back as I am interested in their product for my 91 K5. You can visit their website at www.can-back.com to look at pictures, etc. I am arranging on doing some group purchases if the administrators allow it once production has begun. I have also posted this on fullsizechevy.com .
The K5 tops should be done with R&D and ready for production in two months. It will then be about 3-4 weeks of production before the first batch is ready for shipping. Many model truck tops are already out and available. I am really trying to drum up some interest in these so that another great soft top company does not go out of business. Thanks, Ryan B.

p.s. here is a pic from ck5.com of an earlier can-back installed on a k5 with a yakima load warrior rack, courtesy of steve I believe :) .

Yeah. Seems like Can Back has been saying they are going to start production on k5 tops for about a year now.......I'll believe it when I see it. They will prolly be 2K bucks by then.

Welcome aboard and thanks for the info. I too will believe it when I can see it though. There have been too many times this has come up and things have fallen through.

In the mean time, get some pics of the rig and the camaro.:D

The 4 holes you drill were in the bed rail, not the tailgate. A stainless frame- if you're talking about the part that mates to the bed rail -would be nice, but a little overkill. Galvanized steel would keep the cost down and work just fine. I would be more concerned with the upgraded stitching.

Here's the old thread, they were saying 1st quarter '08 six months ago. That gives them 5 more weeks. Sounds like they will miss that by at least a few months. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187252&highlight=can-back&page=2

well, when I talked to one of the head guys he said the fire really set them back. Their other tops are already available, just not a k5. They are currently working on bronco tops. I believe the guy that it will be late spring when they are ready to be produced. I talked to the guy for about a half hour about the details going into it.

As far as SS goes, this is the only pic I have. She's my baby and I try to drive the K5 most of the time. The SS just hit 20k miles this past month. Here is a pic of the k5 when I bought it. I removed the cheesy license plate and all the stickers. Adding 33x12.50x17 pro comp mts and some AR Thug Teflon wheels next weekend. Thanks for the welcome and I look forward to being a member on such a fun and informative site!

why would you be concerned with the upgrading stitching? That seems like a needed improvement to all soft tops that were produced for these trucks. He said stainless steel with possible powdercoating. I was under the impression by him that the prices on the Can-back site now are true to the k5 tops when they come out. I understand 1200-1300 bucks is a lot, but not really for a well made top. Check out the prices for a top to any convertible sports car and you will understand what I'm saying. Anyways, I'm excited and I hoping like you guys that this production date is for real and we can all get in on this before summer time!

All I can tell you is if they do go into production and you want one-BUY IT! Do not wait, because it might not be available later. The price keeps going up, but so does everything else.

you got that right! I spent hours trying to trace and track every soft top produced for these trucks in the last 10 years or so. No one seemed able to stay in business (which is understandable considering the small market and also the reason why the price is climbing). I might even buy two just in case because if history repeats itself, I dont want to be screwed out of getting a top. The only reason Bestop still makes thim is because the have a zillion other products to keep them afloat. And I heard they will not even be producing the first gen tops much longer.

why would you be concerned with the upgrading stitching? I understand 1200-1300 bucks is a lot, but not really for a well made top.

1) Because that is where I've had issues with mine.
2) It is quality, but it is also stone simple. There is no mechanism like a car top or most other K5 have.

If I had a nice DD K5 I would not hesitate to buy one.

edit: I ment I would not hesitate

exactly, there are issues with the stitches wearing out, which is why they are upgrading the stitch to a stronger polymer. I would love to ask Steve how loud his is on the highway.

My intentions as far as the DD goes, Can-Back in the Summer only, hard top the rest of the time.:saweet:

are you parting out your K5? I saw your for sale thread. Do you have another one or what? I have been wanting one for awhile and now that I have one I want to keep it forever. The only bad part is these gas prices!

Edit I see its your personal collection of parts :)

Nice K5! Sweeeeet Camaro!:thumb::thumb:
Many of us have been waiting for someone besides bestop to start making a quality top for k5s again.
Hopefully canback will come thru for us.
Welcome to the addiction.

Steve no longer has a body, much less a soft top. He could still answer your question though. Stormtrooper has a can-back as well. Nice rides. I love that camaro color. Any and all vehicles should be available with orange (any shade).:D

thanks man. I was gonna take the maro to a speed shop in NC and have them do a ton of work to the motor (i.e. turn it into a 430hp car), but I decided to do just exhaust and headers so I can play with the K5:saweet:

well, my name on ls1tech.com is SOMCockySS so in SC that means I love the Carolina Gamecocks and despise all that is orange (i.e. Clemson). Car confuses people as to where my loyalties lie....thats why just ordered my custom plate....CockySS so people will know!

Can't fault you for that. I'm a Big Orange fan myself. Even though as the user name indicates I went to a different S.E.C. school (MSU) :D

ya'll had a great year, everyone tends to look the other way when it comes to MSU, Vandy, etc. but no more. MSU looked top notch this past year. What did you major in?

Landscape Architecture and Landscape Construction. If my wife had let me stay another year I could have had a major in History, Math, Art, English, Biology and General Science. She was tired of me being 2 hrs away all week so I had to move back home with what I had.:D

yeah, i could have had a degree in biology, history, and religion on top of BS with just 3 more semesters. I have a BS in Nursing, work as a Trauma ICU RN and love it. Was Pre-Med but it wasnt worth it for me.
