Hello there, the Indy 4x4 jamboree is comming this weekend. I'm going there to see if I can get a good deal on a set of tires. I was originally planning on getting the 38.5" x 15" boggers, but lately I have really been thinking about running the 42" x 15" swampers.

For you guys that are running 42s what is your drivetrain setup? and how often do you break stuff? I'm just curious if mine is gonna hold up well to these tires. My setup is: stock 350 TBI - 700R4 - 203/205 doubler - hd driveshafts with 1410 u-joints all around - 14bff rear with stock shafts, detroit locker, 5.13 gears - Dana 60 front, 5.13s, Detroit locker, stock inner shafts, spicer hd u-joints, yukon 35spline chromo outers, and polyperformance drive slugs.

Also feel free to post a pic of your truck with the 42s installed ;)

I think you'll be fine, you are running nearly the exact same setup as me (but Blazer Bash will be the first run with 42's). I know several people with stock inners and Spicers joints and I don't think any of them have broken shafts/joints. It obviously can be done, but I think its still a pretty stout setup.

The inner shafts are probably you're weak link (if they're the neck down version you will break those right away). The u-joint is probably next, then the 700R4.

And since you asked:

No trimming required :haha:

A guy in the club runs 42's on a 7k lb. Ford truck with a built 460, C6, 205, D70 rear (welded), front D60 with locker.

- broke a front Lock-right after several years of abuse on 38's, and then 42's
- broke a 1310 u-joint on front driveshaft (now runs 1410 and 1350 stuff)
- broke a front knuckle (Fords are known to be weaker than Chevy/Dodge stuff), now has Dedenbears.
- broke a Spicer 35-spline stub...but the spindle bearing was shot and had made a nice groove around the stub right where it broke. I'm sure it was stress riser and weakened the shaft there, but it was after several years of abuse

I am running a very similiar set-up as you too. 547ci cad stroker, t-400, 203/205 doubler 60f & 70 rear w/ 5.13's & detroits. I haven't wheeled mine much, but haven't broke it either. I am running new replacement spicer shafts in the frt & stock rear shafts.

And a pic since you asked.

boz42...

what size springs are you running? I'm thinking about doing 42s and im tryin to get different ideas on lift size.

If im keeping my toyota axles alive on 42" IROK's, i think you will be alright with a 14bFF and a 60, so long as you dont drive like a bug masher.

That drivetrain you listed is pretty beefy and shouldn't have a problem taking quite a bit of abuse from 42's before something fails. A good buddy of mine Fred (FWP) runs 42" TSL's on his 7K K5 and has hit some of the hardest trails in AZ and hits them often. His drivetrain is very similar to yours except I believe his driveshafts aren't quite as beef and he has a TH350w/6:1 doubler. He runs stock Spicer 35spl stubs and as far as I know sofar so good. He did break a Chevy Knuckle once after about 5 years of hard wheelin on 38's and then 42's.

Oh yeah, the difference in height between 42's and 38.5's is almost 5" (the 38.5" swampers are more like 37).

You only get half of those inches in ride height?

On the front, I am running stock 3/4 ton 56" springs w/ out the overload or the smallest spring in the pack. Front axle is moved forward 3.5", by new front spring hangers. 7.25" rear shackles

On the rear I am running stock 1/2 ton 56"ers w/ the long side forward. That moved rear axle back about 5.5". I am running ORD shackle flip, & DIY4X "UDSR" 7" rear shackle.

I ran 42's with mild 350,doubler,stock inner 35 outer non greased ujoint 60 and stock 14bolt, 4.56 gears and never had a problem

I beat on my 60/14 combo like I'm mad at it. 44's that measure 42" does that count.

I have yet to break anything in either axle but I sure got good at blowing up dana 44 parts before I had the 60.

this is the best shot I have of the axles.:D

qjet 350/465/203/205, 60/14b det/welded. 5.13's. Warn slugs. stock spicer 35 spline outters with 5-806 joints. 1410 yokes at both diffs, highangle 1350 cv's at both t-case out puts. Never broke a thing axle related. :D

Thanks for all the help guys! I went ahead and ordered the 42s at the 4x4 jamboree yesterday. They should be here in a few weeks and I plan on grooving them like kidjethro did.
