Who has the machined shift rail option? And,How often do you use the front wheel only option? How usefull/handy is it in real life wheeling situations? How often do you use it? :)

Well I have a doubler not just a 205 but it is triple sticked, so essentially a double sticked 205, I have only used it a couple of times. But would use it more often if I had chro mos in the front. The couple of times I used it though made quick work of what would have otherwise been a difficult obstacle
 
I wish I would have had front only last time I was out wheeling. Was nasty mud and would have been nice to roll up to the rock and do a nice little burnout to clean my tires and then climb up, instead I had to do a 4 wheel one and dug my rear down and got it even more muddy.

But you can couple them with rear cutting brakes and get some nice turning radius as well
 
I do and have officially used them once and it saved my bacon could not have done it with out it. So for me its worth whatever I have into it because I probably would have ended up upside down at the bottom of a big mountain with out them.

I also have a triple stick but it is basically the same.
 
Ah cool. Also, I was thinking it might be usefull if someone blew the gears/axles in a rear,you cld just drive it home in front wheel only drive?:thinking: :thumb:
 
It's an essential tool in tight terrain. That's all there is to it, you'll use it a lot if you wheel where it's tight. This year's UA trip was a great illustration, we used front drive a LOT and it kind of hurt watching rigs without it try to get around. We'd pull up a little past a tree and front dig right around it and without front drive other rigs were backing and filling or taking the damage.

You can't drive home in front wheel drive much different than just using 4wd since most of the time you'll have to take the rear driveshaft out either way.

You will generally need some front axle beef but if you have a D60, you can do it with spicer shafts in most situations. I've also used front only in a D44 truck to diagnose front drive problems. Not totally necessary but handy still.
 
i hear it also makes shifting a lot better than the single stick 205 that can bind up at times.

i got the ord tripple stick with my ord doubler kit and cant wait to play with it. :D
 
I have only used the front wheel drive only a few times but it does make you more maneuverable. More than anything I use the twin stick to pop in and out of 4 wheel drive on the fly.

At the ice races it works well.
 
I don't really need it for what I do, but the transfer case was apart at the time. I think I even ask on CK5 about it.
I think the consensus was, it is easier to do it while it's out than in. I bought a twin stick and ground the rails.

I did do a front wheel burn out once.:haha:
It was nice to have that option.
 
You might want to consider hydroassist steering if you have a front locker or spool though. I cant turn worth a crap in front only when its locked but thats a different problem. :)

One thing where I used it where I didn't think I would ever was on the road.

Off to go snow wheeling and alot of icy patches with dry pavement in between, didn't want to just run 4 wd, because there were long patches of dry in between long patches of ice. At the time I had 44" tires on. No weight over the back end it was downright scary. Put it in front wheel drive and that helped a ton when I hit the icy patches, no more instant sliding.
 
I have used mine a handful, but I'm pretty long wb(123"). Like Stephen said it works great in tight places. The longer your wheelbase, the quicker things become tight. Throw a ball valve in to lock the rear brakes up while front digging and it becomes even better. If you can get them to not slide anyways. I also use rear 2wd low more than anything, and pop the front in when needed. Worth the little bit of extra time involved to mod the rail for sure.

Oh, lots of folks have 'em. I've only used mine when the rear driveshaft was tied up though.

Yes, but the ones who do use for trail use have spoken how well it works.
It got me thinking for a (far) future project.
