I am just curious, for those that are running 2-2.5 to a single 3" exhaust, who has a magnaflow on it? I am running one on my 79, 5x8x18, and the sound is almost deafening.

GMPP 350HO
My setup- 2.5" ramhorns, custom made d-port collector "y", with magnaflow metal spun cat, magnaflow muffler 3".

I feel like I am the only one dealing with this issue as it hasn't been discussed much AFA sound level. I used a dB meter in it at, easy take off is around 75 dB, highway , 2400 RPM at 55-60 it nears 90 dB. Seems extreme for the set-up.

I'm running a 454 with a 2.5 into 3 with a magnaflow and it doesn't seem to bad to me but my old set up was 3" dual 2 chamber flowmasters. :dunno:

I'm running the same setup with a TBI 350 with a High Flow cat it sounds really good not to loud at all . not sure how much the cat quits it down but it can't be much also its on a V3500 so the tailpipe is way at the back

Stock manifolds, stock Y-pipe, no cat, single 3" pipe, FM 50 series, tailpipe behind left rear tire.

It's loud. No conversation while accelerating. Cruising at 65-70 on the highway you can carry on a conversation or listen to music.

Hope that helps.

Playing around with it, we tried different mufflers (without driving). Flo-pro 3 chamber, sounded quieter but kinda odd sound, stock 3" muffler, sounded quieter but dumb, Flowmaster super 50 was quieter, but I am not a hollow sound type of person, at least on my blazer.
We put a twister spiral core race muffler in the tail, it helped a tiny bit, but added a strange sound to it, so I will be changing my tail again.

I just talked to magnaflow, I was going to goto a longer 24" muffler, but they suggested the 5x11x22 would be a better choice. So I am going to try that, hoping it works out. I also ordered a flowmaster 70BBII just to try and see how loud that would be also.

Granted this testing is reving it up in the shop, so I can return the mufflers that I do not use if need be. I may do a dB measurement to get a more conclusive idea on actual level.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I will post up what I decide on so if others have a similar problem they may know of a possible solution

I have the exact same configuration with the addition of a cat and my muffler is an FM Super 40. It's not as loud as I had originally anticipated and drone on the highway isn't terrible but it does let you know it's there.

lol, you must still have the interior in your truck. Ya know, carpet and stuff. :D

Nope it's totally stripped except for some carpeting over the wheel wells to keep the rock *PING* sound to a minimum.

I'm still surprised as I expected it to be way more obnoxious. There are times when I find myself wishing it was louder.

The strange thing on mine, I have dynamat on the entire floor, added insulation in the rear side panels, and carpet with jute padding on it. My wife didn't like riding in it before cause it was loud, now it's even louder, and the whole idea was making it more efficient while lowering exhaust interior noise.

Here are some pics of the setup:

Nice work man.

What's the black on the tailpipe?

It's just a high temp flat black paint. I like my tailpipes hidden on my personal vehicles, especially since I ran the tail on the outside of the frame between that and the tire, it was really visible, the black is just nice to hide that. I just polished the end slightly as you can do with aluminized tubing rather than a tip. I have a short 3" to 4" welded end tip I was going to put on, but there is something about a pipe sticking out that just yells purpose built.

I agree with tucking the pipes, thats a pet peave of mine too

But when I built the wifes car I had to keep the pipes far away to keep the fumes from getting in the car, 10 years ago i would have dealt with it, but now i cant have the kids passing out on long trips.
