Has anyone swapped a Ford HP D44 in place of a Chevy D44? I picked up a free Ford NP205 and i am researching the Ford D60 swap in front, but i started checking on Ford's D44. It looks like it is a direct bolt on for model years 78-79 like the D60.
Also can i change the Ford Knuckles for the Chevy Knuckles to keep the 6 bolt, and are there any advantages on going with a Ford D44 other than the High Pinion? Just Curious:confused:

Just a few pointers. Ford 205's are 31spline and use the round 6 bolt pattern. I believe you;d have to swap in a GM 32spline input and have a round pattern adapter behind either a th400 or an 85+ 465.

I am doing a Doubler set-up. So the Adapter should be the right bolt pattern.

The ford D44 and D60 are both high pinion axles. Save your money for a ford 60, it pays for itself in the long run. If you get a ford D44, the resale value isn't that great. Not many people will buy it if you decided to step up to 1 tons. I know a couple of guys who are stuck with the D44s and still trying to sell them.

I can sell HP44's a lot easier than GM's. Maybe it's the area. IDK. Usurally get $500-$550 for a pair. HP D44/D60. 78/79 HP D60's are hard to find and expensive. I sell a lot of D60's and don't see many west of illinois. Lots in MA and PA though.

I agree the D60 swap is the way to go. I was just wondering about the D44 and could not find info on anyone doing this swap. I just figured with the Ford D44 using a High Pinion design that guy's wanting to stay with a 44 would think of swapping out. But then they would have to swap t-cases so i guess that would be why.

I did a search on both axles and D44 are easier to find, but i think for any D60 Chevy/Ford finding one is kind of in the right place at the right time. D60's are in Demand. The prices speak for themselves.

I work with my buddy but we've sold probably 25 D60's in the last year and only had a couple 78/79's. Just saying don't hold your breath for a 78/79 cause I've been looking for 5 yrs and only had 3. I'd either go HP D44 or stick with GM parts IMHO.

Thats why i am going to run my Chevy D44 until i can find the correct D60. Like i said previously you have to be in the right place at the right time. I am sure the correct Ford D60 will present itself. Lets just hope i have the cash to get it:D

You'll have to change knuckles out and stud shafts, Fords are shorter. If it is an HD 44 the axle tubes are thicker.

So it sounds like your saying there are some advantages to swapping in a Ford D44. From what info i have found it sounded like there might be a benefit to going with the Ford D44 over the Chevy D44. Just havent found anyone who has done it. Cool:D

Looks like you scored with that buy. Thats what i mean when i say in the right place at the right time. I have been having a blast finding parts for my K-5 so i know when i am ready for the swap that D60 will pop out and say buy me.:D

i sold everything off it for what i bought it for and i was only out 200 bucks in gas and 100 in tolls to get it...but i have since made up for that :)
