ttt for the night crowd...PAD:D
I just got done rebuilding my 9" 78 Bronco. There should be 4 large phillips screws, countersunk. I had to use an impact driver to get them loose. Once they are removed, a few "taps" with a hammer, and the case splits in two. What year Bronco? Mine has 4 spider gears, and 31 spline. Open and posi carriers look almost identical, but the posi case is thicker. I tried to use non-posi bolts to put my posi case back together, and they were too short.:doah:

If it has friction plates in it it's a Trac-Loc. If it's full of gears it's just an open carrier...

That case is not an open carrier. If you look where the ring gear bolts go through you can see how they are shrouded by a portion of the carrier, an open carrier is not like that. Also have a shop magnuflux around the area of those bolt holes as MANY of them are cracked in that area.

honeslty i could tell you...except it was a 1st gen, and he offered it to me before he sold it...and i truned him down.:( :doah: to this day i ahte myself for it.

the truck was doen 6" lift 35bfg muds, 4.10s detroit inthe rear, built 302 and a 4speed. half cab and was painted like a metallic green...gawd i miss that truck:(

anyways

theres no philips head scres on it...just a roll pin holding in the center pin, and 2 holes that upon lookin init had nothing in them...

There should definately be at least 2 countersunk phillips screws that hold the two case halves together. These screws are located under the ring gear. If you look and don't see any screws then you should at least see some countersunk holes.

hmm...maybe im retarted heres the pics...

like i said i *believe* this is tehs ide taht the ring gear would bolt onto...i dont see any countersunk holes...

Looking at the pics, the countersunk holes are not there. Now that I think bout it, mine only had 2 screws, directly opposite each other. I have an open carrier that has the shrouded shoulders for the ring gear bolts. The C7A is the orig application the part was designed for. In this case C=60's, 7=1967, A=Full size ford car. If the third digit was a "T", then it was originally designed for truck applications.

From only having one cross shaft, that means only 2 spider gears, so its prob a 28 spline LOPO pass car carrier. I think all the 31 spline carriers had 4 spider gears, but I could be mistaken. The 2 halves of the case fit together pretty tight. I had to use a large brass hammer to get them apart.
