1978 Ford F-150 NP 205, with standard transmission. I need a new speedometer gear, which rides on the rear output shaft of the 205. I haven't been able to find one so far. There were a couple used ones on EBAY but condition didn't look great. This is a white in color Nylon type gear, inside is splined and has rollers that ride on the output shaft. Should be 7 tooth, maybe 8. The teeth that intersect with the gear on the speedo cable, if you lay the gear down those teeth start from the lower left and go diagonally to the upper right. on the edges of the diagonally splined area there is also a smooth area around the outer circumference if that makes sense.

I have found a blue gear for an NP 208 that looks similar but they don't have any dimensions so I can't tell if it would work, I put in a call to a couple places waiting to hear back, but thought I would post here in case someone has an idea where to get one.

Checking with a couple places in Denver tomorrow. If they have a new on on the shelf, I can put it in and put it back together. If I have to order one I will get to put it together to use the truck, then when the new one arrives I get to tear it apart and do it all over again with the new part.

i got 3 7 tooth red there mostly gm . and a yellow 5 tooth dont recall what it was from . maybe a divorced ih case or dodge .

So new gear on the way, but needed it back together for incoming snow, so back together it want. I took off the driveshaft, yoke, small cover, speedo gear, speedo cable, large cover, so I was down to the body of the T-case with just the rear output shaft sticking out. I also took the bearing pack out to get the speedo gear off. Good thing I did there was no evidence of any type of gasket or gasket material between the large cover and the case and obviously had been leaking for a while. Only thing I saw was blue permatex on the end of the bolts.

I had my description wrong in the first post, the speedo gear rides on the splined shaft, the roller bearings are in the large cover closest to the case. Not sure what great engineer came up with the idea of roller bearings with nothing to hold them in. Since I didn't drop the exhaust you have to put the bearings in and luckily I didn't lose any, I uses a little grease to help hold them in while I tilted the cover over the exhaust then lined it up on the shaft and gingerly mounted it to the T Case.

Took me 3 attempts to get it on without disturbing the rollers, each time having to take it back off clean the rollers after locating them all put back in grease a little and try to get it installed without having them fall back out again.

Engineers are not my favorite people. I called the fiasco "Fun with Fords"

So now when the new gear gets here I get to take it apart again but this time I don't have to take the large cap off and play with the rollers again YAY! Now time to get back to work on the Jimmy! Vent over.

Glad it'll work out for you. I like those guys. I've gotten some tools from them and some parts.

Just imagine life if there had never been any engineers. If you're so against them, just stop using everything designed by them.

I had to stop for a minute and remind myself what you were working on. I was thinking “I’m the SOB that put that 205 together”. Then I remembered it wasn’t the Cherry Bomb!
