Cool on the real chrome. What's the story on the great score? Don't need to know price, just the adventure.
I have seen some fairly decent beds on pickup bed trailers on C-list and FB Market Place. FYI
My son was out on a visit at one of his potato farmer customer’s shop and he turned and saw this truck sitting on the side of the field right next to a pretty busy road, he asked the farmer about the truck and was told that many people stop and ask to buy the truck but never return with the $2,500.00 he was asking for the truck
My son sent pics to me of the truck and asked if I was interested in buying it, I said tell the farmer I’ll take it sight unseen for his price. It took me a week or so to gather the cash but we picked it up last weekend. I had been out to see it in person many times just to get as much info as I could about the truck before we picked it up.
Engine is a 327 born in Flint, MI the second week of September 1968
Rockwell transfer case
Very original, it has the factory owners manual, with receipts showing oil changes and verifying the 110,000 miles on the odometer, even has the original jack, handle and lug wrench.
Looks like the seat has been recovered but does have the build sheet still attached.
Dash pad looks original, has a aftermarket rug on it to protect it.
Rocker panels and cab corners have zero rust and are original, only rust is at the bottom of the cowl drain where it’s plugged from years of dust, easy fix.
The farmer had his shop guy put a new fuel pump on the truck because “it kept losing its prime” but wasn’t able to get it started after the new pump so they just pushed it out of the shop to the edge of the field. My son and I replaced the rubber fuel line from the steel line on the frame to the new pump because it was too short and kinked, we then found the original Ac-Delco frame mounted fuel filter canister was loose and the gasket was dry rotted that was allowing it to “lose the prime”. We drained out the two year old fuel and put fresh fuel in the tank, cranked it over with the battery from “Munepit” and it fired up, smooth running and sounds awesome. We got this truck started and I drove it home from our shop for a cost of $5.00 in parts and 10 gallons of fresh fuel.
Now the reality check, we found LOTS of mouse sign in the cab from sitting at the edge of the field. We pulled the floor mats and the seat after I disinfected the whole cab with bleach water, then vacuumed up most of the crap and then pressure washed the cab. It seems like we got most all of the sign removed but I think there’s a good chance there’s a nest in the heater box, I’ll pull the heater box just to be sure.
You just never know why things happen the way they do, why didn’t anyone else show back up with money for at least two years that this truck sat next to a busy road, I’m so fortunate to get such a great deal on this truck on a chance visit by my son to a customers location.
