For $600 I can get.......3/4 ton axles (14b and dana 44), 400/208 (I run a 700R4/241 now)....and crossmember. This setup came from a 87 Suburban.
Not sure what the gears are but I plan on using 4:56 for the 400 tranny, or 4:88 to keep the 700R4. Going with 35" tires.

Will the axle from the 87 burb be a 14bsf or a 14bff?

It depends what the weight rating was on the suburban. If it came with the higher weight rating it will have the full floater, you will just have to go look at it

Most likely it's a 14SF, and it will also most likely be a 10 bolt front unless it has been swapped previously. I wouldn't run 4.56's and 35's with a TH400, you'll be miserable on the highway spinning at 3000 rpm at just 65 mph. 4.10's without overdrive gets it at least a little more reasonable.

Chances are really good those diffs are already 4.10's anyways.

Is the 700R-4 dead? If not I'd just keep it.

The 700R4 is starting to show signs of (I'm past the warranty so here come the clunks). I like the 700R4 because of the OD...so I'll end up rebuilding it if needed. I thought the $600 for the lot was a decent price if the axles were really a 14bff and dana 44 + the 400/208 combo with crossmembers.
Eventually, over time, I'll find the axles w/4:56 and can get rid of the 1/2 ton stuff.
And to make things clear.....I am not against 1/2 ton setups. I regeared my 10b's to 4:10's for the 32" tires.....it was a great learning experience.
Now to bigger and better things....:wink1:
