Nice.

I once went to pick up a motor from a guy that had quite a few old chevy engines for sale on craigslist. Got to his house and he had 5 81-87 shortbed chevys that had all been converted to 3/4 or 1-ton drivetrains and fi engines. He had one hooked up to a trailer and said he was going to buy another as soon as I left.

lol, truck hording. It's not uncommon, in fact I think there may be a few here  This guy had 3 K5s, this truck. It really was a shop, they had quite a few project trucks going at once. One S10 Blazer with 1/2 axles and a 4.3. Some buggy I only got a glimpse of, another 90s chev, and that's all I saw in the dark.

Got it, left the 42s, he gave me some bald 35 rollers to get home. I don't think I'll go back and get them, with the beadlocks, and some good usable life, it was probably worth $1000, but this will be a dual purpose rig, I'm not driving around with 42s.

It's rough around the edges, but not bad. It was a toy, just a matter of fixing some little things to be a nice DD, but lots of little things. But for the price, it's well worth it, hell some places people try to get $1500 for running gear alone.

So I kinda decided for now, I need a pick up more, so I think the Blazer will be the doner. The body on it is rough, the engine/trans/transfer is the only good stuff on it. I'll take all the goodies from that and put it on the truck. The engine seems fine so I have time to pull the 6.2 off the Blazer and do a gasket rebuild on it, cause really it's fine, then sell the 350. I'm torn on keeping the sm465, or using the 700r4 :dunno: The 4spd needs some loving, it's all good really, clutch really needs adjustment, it's super stiff to push. But I'd rather go crawling with an auto, but DD a manual, but OD is nice. Body is in pretty darn good shape.

I'll get more pics up tomorrow, check stuff out better, it's late, dark, I'll play with it after work.

Oh... and there's something, np208 or somethin' behind the manual ...wtf.

Huh?

lmao, that wasn't supposed to be there, looks like that's parts of a mix of two sentences. Happens all the time, as I'm typing on my laptop, sometimes my palm slides across the mouse touchpad and moves the pointer and moves where I'm typing and replaces stuff, wipes out a whole sentence. It's annoying, but usually I catch it. :doah:

I was trying to type they said something about not having a 208 behind the trans. I'll look later.

(and as I was typing this, somehow it went from desktop mode to the windows tiles, and popped up bing travel. I hate windows 8) If I had a mouse, I'd disable the touchpad.

Well got home, looked the truck over a bit.

I'm torn, do I want a SWB truck, or do I want to put the cab on the K5 frame.

I could use a pick up, but not terribly often, I could use a trailer with the K5.(small stuff, plywood, wood, etc. No vehicles, maybe an atv or something)

Would rather have the shorter wheel base for when I go crawling

I'd have to build an A frame or something to remove both cabs, I have no flat, cement nothing, all in the dirt.

I want my 6.2 in it, think I'm set on the 700r4l, I'll be removing the block, all the lift and junking/selling it or something. End result, maybe 2-4" of lift, fender trimming and 35-38s.

What'd be faster, easier, the SWB I guess? I wanna drive and play, not an endless project. The K5 is unmolested, which helps starting fresh. I guess it's a mixture of usefulness of a pick up, and wanting the look of a K5/pick up cab/flat bed. I could sell off everything I Don't want on the truck and recoup money for parts. Namely the bed, engine/trans/transfer, then the 1/2 ton axles on the Blazer, perhaps sell or scrap the body, sell the tailgate, topper.

Unfortuantly that'd mean I'd have to fix the headgasket on the toyota camry and drive that around for a while :doah:

So indecisive! :doah:

So the idea of just keeping it a K5, put in the axles, stealing a few other goodies like the bumpers and elec fans, and slowly fix the body issues. Then put my axles on the swb, and selling it off and recouping most my money back, as it is a working, running truck.

I went back to my 'build' thread, that I barely started and never added to. I had a good plan. But body work is not my thing. I could buy new floor pans, and the cargo area sections and do it myself, probably. But I'd be so pissed if I butchered it all, them things be expensive. Plus needing rockers, though all the body stuff could be done slowly over time.

:doah::doah::doah::doah::doah::doah:

Why would you want the short wheel base? That is the worst part of a Blazer.

Martin

I do just fine with it :dunno: You talking about it affecting street driving or off road? Trying to decide, I did a bit of "SWB or K5" searching, a few sites talked about the SWB having an advantage over the K5, but I guess I just don't understand the benefit to about 10 more inches of wheel base. Then again I've never driven a SWB/LWB square body off road.

My reasoning is small trails, tighter turns. I'd imagine there's pros and cons to both. Break over angles of a short wheel base are better. S/LWB would be better on climbs, steps, etc, rear drive line angles I guess too. As far as off camber, that's debatable since the width would be the same, CoG is better with a K5, right? At least with weight over the rear. And on road situations, sure a S/LWB would be better I guess, I'm just imagining driving down the highway in a bronco II, samurai, jeep..etc. And as far as towing, sure I'd buy a LWB for that, but that's also irrelevant for my purposes.

Guess I'm trying to decide what I want/need most in a vehicle, over all. Everything I'd need a short bed for, I could use a trailer, though yes it's easier to toss something in a bed, than hooking up to a trailer, but I don't need that too often. I don't ever usually haul people, so I don't really need the blazer body, and a pickup cab is easier to heat/cool. Also a pain to roll down the window to open the tailgate, put stuff back there, but if I upgraded the wiring, replaced the key up/down function, that'd help out. I've never had a K5 it worked on. Putting stuff in the cargo area keeps it dry, which is a plus. Having the topper off all summer is nice, and also a pain sometimes.

I have options, just trying to figure out the best. Another big thing is time to do either project, doing it in the dirt sucks big time, so whatever is easier/faster. And if I go the K5 route, I could resell the truck easier as a working, running 1/2 ton, and recoup money for other parts. Easier swapping axles, than either a cab, or engine/trans/transfer. I can roll axles around, I can't roll an engine stand in the dirt, and I'd have to build an A frame for the cab, but could also use it for the engine then roll chassis under it.

Now I'm back to keeping the truck as is :doah:

But perhaps lowering it a bit, removing the block, something simple like a shackle flip, it needs crossover steering something fierce. Taking goodies off the Blazer, and selling it off. But I so very much enjoy my diesel.

I just wanna drive SOMETHING I enjoy. And the truck has such a nicer body than the Blazer. I'll change my mind by the time I wake up tomorrow. :(

Hey, I'm in northwest Arkansas, if there's anything you need help finding let me know. I'm in the middle of a K5 build myself, and have some extra stuff, and am pretty good at finding stuff.

A nice good big tall set of jack stands? :doah:

Not s single flat area anywhere to be had. Had a little oopsy, but it was slow and controlled. Truck is next, flattened the front tires, put it in 4x4/reverse. But DAMN is that frame high up off the ground. This is after I got it back off the ground somewhat with the high lift jack.

My axles are 3:73 :angry1: Guy said they were 4:10, should have checked :doah: Starting to get discouraged with this whole thing. Oh well, guess I'll get a set of 33s on there, that's what I had before, it won't be lacking power on hills, and treat that 700r4 better. 4:10 would have been pushing that 700r4 with 35s, I'd be where I am now, lacking power in 3rd/4th, especially up steep hills.

On a good note, I do have better/stronger axles, regardless. I can eventually find a nice set of rims, so down the road when I go 1 ton I can have rims/tires set aside. Also, my 3:08s would be a nice DD gear for that sm465. I'm removing the lift, when I'm done that SWB will be a good start for someone else's project, I should be able to make my money back now that'll it'll be more DD/average person usable. Take those transfercase drop spacers, and the pitman arm off, put it all back to stock. Maybe I'll keep it as a truck :dunno:

You mean like these? (12 ton)
I found them on CL listed for $60

I think Harbor Freight has them in orange for around $100 (maybe less).

The bummer is that I don't have 4 and can't pull the front till the rear is done.

And NO, the goal is not set at 10'
