Found My Blazer - Couple Q's Before I Buy

Folks,

I think I finally found the Blazer I've been looking for. It's not a CUCV but it IS a diesel and the price is right (or at least I think so) and it's local.... whew.

1982 K5 Blazer Diesel w/ the 6.2L
135,000 miles (!)

Rust is not bad... the passenger fender-well has a hole in it and there is rust in the passenger rocker panel. Other than that any other rust is minimal. Frame looks great too.

The owner claims he hadn't started it in a month or two when I looked at it yesterday. It started up fine, very fast really. It wouldn't idle without a little throttle input. He thought there was a cold idle solenoid or something that wasn't working right.

Any thoughts on cold idle issues?

It ran a bit rough at first. He was thinking that maybe one of the injectors was clogged, stuck, lazy, etc.

Any thoughts on rough idle or stuck injectors or the like?

With some throttle input, holding the RPMs steady the engine idled and ran at higher RPMs very smooth... hardly any movement or vibrations.

I did notice the Glow Plug Light came on periodically while the engine was warming up. He thought this was normal and indicated that this also occurs when the batteries are very low on juice. Sounded a little weird to me but I have not owned a beast like this so I wouldn't know. The batteries were dead and required a boost from some portable battery boosters.

Any thoughts on glow plug light coming on periodically?

I thought I only saw one alternator... do just the CUCVs have 2?

Well, that's about it, everything else on the rig was fine, just a bit dirty and neglected a bit.

I would certainly appreciate any help you can provide this weekend. I'd like to give the guy a call on Monday to let him know what I've decided.

Thanks!!!

IMO, i would find a diesel mechanic and pay them to check it over. a person can spend a lot of dough on those motors chasing problems...

good luck

How much is he asking? you could always swap the diesel for a 350. Diesels are a little pricey on parts and a decently built 350 is fairly cheap.

I want the diesel that's for sure. He's asking $1500 and I hope to get it for $1250 at the most. The truck itself is pretty decent.

I'm getting a feeling that maybe there isn't a lot of 6.2L Diesel folks here :)

Maybe someone can offer up a good diesel engine site that might be able to help me with these questions?

I don't want to keep the guy hangin' much longer... I'd like to close the deal.

There is a cold idle solenoid that should come on and increase the idle speed until it's warmed up. Whether this is the issue you had I don't know, but it could of been the problem.

It's normal for the glow plug light to flash on and off sporadically right after the engine has started, again until it's warmed up some....at least my '90 always did this since I bought it in '94 with under 50k on the clock.

The 6.2 diesels are very simple motors, they just require slightly different procedures and train of thoughts versus working on gas motors.

Thanks! I think that was sort of the info I was looking for... I really appreciate it!!!

Thanks, I am quite new here... didn't know there was a sub forum like that here... THANKS!!!
