Thanks for the help again CK5, and I found the problem with the brakes. I checked the reservoir level and it was low, had a family member pump the brakes a few times and sure enough, air was bubbling in the MC. I followed all the hard lines, no leaks. Finally I removed the right rear wheel since there was some sort of grime build up, and confirmed my suspicion. Brake fluid was all over the inside of the drum, all over the shoes and lining, and all over the drum brake mechanism itself. I can't drive it now since it technically doesn't have brakes, and I lack the tools to remove the flange covering the drum brake mechanism. For S&G's I looked at the front discs, and the rotors are starting to rust on the edges and the calipers are a mess themselves too.

My questions are: What likely happened in the rear drum to cause a large brake fluid leak? What I am looking at in repair costs for a complete brake system overhaul, i.e.; new shoes on all brakes, fluid, new lines, new rotors, new calipers?

Thanks again as always!!

Cliffs:
Had brake problem
Removed right rear drum, found massive brake fluid leak
Front disc brake rotors have major rust build up, calipers too
What happened?
How much to repair?
Thanks

Replacing the brakes isn't that hard and it would sure be cheaper to do it yourself. However, I understand if you want a mechanic to overhaul them. To replace the wheel cylinders and overhaul the rear brakes is probably about $100 in parts. New pads for the front another $30 to $50 depending on the type you buy. Labor to do the job? Should be about 2 hours of work at the most. Say shop rates are $70-90 per hour. So all in all, I figure the job should cost between $270 to $330 at an honest shop. That's my assessment (but everyone has em). Good luck.

That seems reasonable. I actually bought the equipment to do the brakes myself, but when I removed the rear drum, I felt it was above my expertise. Also being a student, and not having a decent work area to do the repairs I may have to send it it :(

Be carefull though most shops aren't decent and will charge you upward of $600 for a brake job.
That si why I do all my work, I can't seem to find decent shops that actually charge me what hours they work or don't screw me by replacing everything they can and charge me a fee for buying my parts.
plus the mark up.
Where in CA?
