Fourwheeler needs a new editor!

My sentiments exactly. I subscribe to all three, FourWheeler, Petersens, and Off-Road. All owned by Primedia. Used to be FourWheeler was a pretty good cross section of all rigs. Petersens leaned towards Chevy, and Off-Road was mostly Ford. Now they are all almost identical. Any review of any product will most likely show up in all three in the same month, or a month apart. It has gotten to the point where the only thing I read anymore is the back ads for different companies, and the new products sections.

For a picture of a Jeep, they will say "so and so brought their CJ-7 with blah-de-blah on it". Then they will show a Bronco OR Blazer OR pickup and say "Some fullsize guys hit the trail, too". It goes beyond biased reporting.

My biggest gripe with any of the mags was Wendy Frazier, who used to write for 4WOR. That lady could not write. It was difficult to even make it through a whole sentence. How did she ever get that job? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I don't even subscribe, but I met all the people at RTC.

You don't even subscribe and don't like the magazine but still applied and got selected for the RTC....Talk about hypocracy. I'm not saying that Thompson was the best editior, but people gripe about everything these magazine guys do. Read the letters to the magazine sometime, there is all ways someone griping, "you don't cover enough Scouts, Nissans, <insert favorite truck here>". They are in the business to sell magazines, period. They are going to print what is popular and has large aftermarket support for even more ad $$$$. Hot Rod Magazine gets the same backlash when a 69 Camaro is on the cover.

Face it, with Primeda controlling most of the automotive magazines out there, I'm sure the editors are on a short leash to make a profit, even if it means falling short on content for the hard core 4WD nuts. You don't like it, fine, don't buy it. With Primeda at the controls, don't expect it to change with a new editior.

I let my subscription run out this month, got really tired of the Ford tech and Ford show trucks on the cover.

Oh really? I couldn't have just be disappointed in the publication and let my subscription run out?

The real money for the mags comes from the advertisers anyway, not from the subscriptions.

Tim,

It's just funny how you make it a point to slam a magazine that you don't like and yet you still find the time to grab a copy of the magazine to get your entry form to RTC. If you hated the magazine that much and let you subscription run out why even enter?

Look I'm not even trying to start a pissing match here and give your credit for entering and competing in RTC. You carried the flag for CK5 and all. But it seems like a smack in the face to those that put the event on that you hate the magazine but still took the invite to come compete. It's just rude. Based on the general crappy attitude towords any subject other than yourself, I should not be suprised.

You may go back to your ranting and bash me if you will, I could care less what you think of me.

I'm not bashing the mag. It's a good mag. It's just gone downhill recently. I'm counting on it getting better. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Edit:

To add something, FW has some GREAT people working for them, including some outstanding journalists and awesome video staff. I just think having that guy as editor was dragging down the ideas.

Robin Stover wrote an awesome article on hydraulic steering last year. Thompson wouldn't let it print, he said, "Nobody would read it." It's just stuff like that, that irks me to no end.

I'll take your point on the staff. You're right. Unfortunately unless Mr. Fox starts his own publishing company and put out "CK5: The Magazine" we are never really going to be satified with what Primieda wants to stuff down our gullets. New editior or not. Like the rest of you I'm tires of seeing Stoopid Duties and even chromed out pimp daddy H2's and other show trucks. But every now an then they run a decent tech story to file away for use later on my own project.

None of the corporate goons down at primidea understand or care and are out to make a profit. Competition from another outside (away from primedia) is probably the only way to force them to get better. Right now all they do is comepete amongst themselves. They set the ad prices and control the market. We still buy them because there is no alternative...At least I need something more Manly to read on the throne than the wife's latest copy of US or People.

I haven't bought an "offroad" mag in about 3-4yrs. If I remember right it was because everything was jeep this jeep that and none of the articles were in depth.

Fourwheeler, well lets just say I let the subscription run out about 4-5 months ago and really don't have any reason to renew. I can't pin point why, but I just wasn't get'n any excitement.

Peterson's, now if one of them get misplaced I freak out. Now complaints from my end.

Playboy is lame. If I want to see something like that I pick up something a little more exiting than that. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

I think it's the term 'sheeple'.
What I mean to say, is that you can only cover the same topic over the same thing so many times and then you start to forget why your there.
We have a new generation coming in every 6 to 12 months, so you sometimes have to cover the same crap again to keep your sales.
Even here,
a newbie ask's a question that has been covered a fewwwww times, he gets the typical response of " do a search ".
Magazine's don't have that option, for instance, when was the last time someone from here ordered a back copy of a mag for an article.
As for the bias t'wards a brand, so?
I read them all for whatever they have to say that I might be able to apply to whatever I might be working on whenever.
As for the guy that got laidoff, if he was responsible for the TTC video when Watson competed, he needs a bullit, not a pink slip.

The film production people are a totally seperate group.

I can't wait to see the DVD from RTC. I'm sure they got some awesome footage of me standing my rig on its back bumper. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
