Frame Around the Steering Box Questions? I have Pics

They are Riveted...

Oh, and NORCAL...I kinda droped your name to anouther 1st gen owner in the "driveway" threads about that boneyard you live by:whistle:

NorCal, No rush at all, and that would be awesome. I just went to a Junkyard locally here and they didn't have a single truck that would work. I can paypal shipping or whatever you need. I'll PM you details.

Thanks

I can't remember if it is bolts or rivets holding in the front cross member. If it's just some bolts, I may be able to help you out. The blazer that I got Z71's WS frame off of, still has that piece.

In all honesty I haven't been the fastest shipper lately, but I could get it to ya if your not in a super rush. :wink1:

Just stopped by there for a second to see if I could find anything for you and dmcx72.

So, let me talk to my guys. I know one of them have a cordless grinder I could use. Mine bit the dust some time ago. That is the piece that you're looking for, correct?

Wow, I am drooling, and do I see a suburban, in over two years of going to the Pick a Part more often than the wife would like I have never seen a suburban or a blazer of that era. Looks like I need to venture a little further.

Well if you manage to get one off (73+ would be great for sway bar mounting) I would be very greatfull. I know it's a PITA though thanks to the Rivets...

Wait, now I'm confused. You want a front cross member for a 67-72 or 73+?

Will the 73+ even work without super modding? I didn't even look for one of those. :dunno:

Either... From what I have read the 73+ will work will very little modding and already has the holes for the sway bar to mount to. If I can get either I will make it work, the older one I will have to mod a little to mount the sway bar to.

there's not much to tell that is/was a blazer anymore:eek1:

I see crappier stuff driving around here and back in ohio than what is in that yard. If money were no issue I'd be buying a bunch of those just to see them drive again!

Ha Ha...If money was no issue my yard would be a 67-72 bone yard.

And that fuel tank would be there too.

If you go back get the last bit of the rear frame horns from the back body mount back. They are good for around $100 or so on the 67-72 board for the guys in the rust belt or hacked up rear frames for bumpers.

OK so this is what I came up with, custom XMember with a lower plate that is about 6 inches wide. The lower section solves my sway bar issue and I am hoping that since it covers a greater surface area than the original and has 3 grade 8 bolts holding it to the frame that it will actually provide a bit more strength to prevent another frame crack?

We'll see, in the process I removed the factory steering support brace, cleaned it up, ran new beads and replaced the Rivets with G8 hardware.

Any thoughts on this solution, Am I asking for trouble somewhere down the line?

Same as the frame and the original xmember. I'll have to check out those yards. What are the names, pick a part, ecology ...

I like the tube idea, much simpler than what I did. I went with the flat stock to give a nice place to mount the sway bar. I am pretty pleased with how it turned out in the end. Thanks for sharing the pic
