Saw a trailer headed for the scrap yard w/ a complete '78 shortbed(minus engine,trans./t-case,and front springs) so I inquired within.Ended up trading complete front clips(my scrap for his)since his was in real good shape considering the year and the fact that it's a Michigan truck.Very little rust anywhere including the frame on the rest of the truck.Next day, went and did some more talking and we're trading complete trucks.
My truck is basically a trazer with a commercial diamond plate steel flat bed.strong 350,465/205(won't come out of 4lo)d44/12b w/ mini spools in both ends, and 4in.lift.Body completely toast.no amount of body work could save it.plastered in mud everywhere including the engine bay.PO is a dumbass.
I'm earning said POS by swaping the spooled d44/12b w/leafsprings into an '88 K5 along with the F'd up 465/205.What remains is the trashed body, frame, commercial flatbed and strong 350 painted with high temp mud.
Now,the shortbed that I'm trading for(scrap for scrap, remember)will be getting the remaining 350(to be reworked),the flat bed and a "yet-to-be-determined" trans.t-case combo.I will be using whatever axels are under the shortbed...for now.
Phase one goals:A)get springs under front of truck and throw on some roller tires in order to move it around the yard.B)rustoleum-ize the lightly rusted frame to keep it that way and may as well do the axels, firewall, bottom of cab,and inner fenders/wells.C)get it to DD status.
Questions on phase one:Found 6" lift springs/blocks on c-list.Will be doing shackle flip rear for sure,so ignore the blocks.Should I A)use the 6" lift springs in front,Or B) use the rears off the K-5? I don't want to screw around with cross-over immediately. Not until I get 3/4t. axels at least and I'm not worried about that either right now.The SB already has the raised steering arm so I'm assuming it's already been lifted at some point. Most likely the reason for the missing front(lift
)springs.I guess what I'm asking is,can I do 52" fronts without cross-over as a temporary solution to not having any fronts right now?I'm plenty resourceful and will not spend money if there's a way around it,but at the same time,SAFETY FIRST! My wife and 6 kids enjoy having me around...I hope.
Give me some opinions/feedback.Meanwhile I need to figure a way to post pics.after all, what good is a build thread without pics? My only camera is a cell phone though. Will it work for this?and how do I go about posting pics? hoping/assuming I can do such a thing without being a member.I want to post pics for EVERYONE to see. It's part of the learning and teaching of our common interests and if I can give to the less knowledgeable while learning from the more knowledgeable, nothing but good can come of it.
