I just had my 71 cab sand blasted and im looking for some direction on what to fix by cutting and patching and possibly hammering out and what to fix by covering it up since it wont be visible(back of the cab) or leaving it be.

It is surprisingly clean for what i was expecting. I thought it would be much worse than it is.

The cab has been attempted to be restored at some point but some spots were just covered up and others just seem to be done incorrectly.

Even though it is a fairly clean cab, it definitely needs attention:

1. There is power steering fluid that leaked from my hydroboost when i had it mocked up on the firewall and it appears to be seaping from the seams and tight spots that it has been hiding in. How can i get rid of the oil so it does not mess with my paint? I am most worried about this issue.

2. Most obvious are the cab supports. I have replacements ready to go on and i think that they will be fairly straight forward.

3. Floorpan rust through by the kick panels of both DS and PS. Both sides were attempted to be covered by just a patch welded over top of them and then filled to make smooth. I have the DS pan and i just need the PS pan and those shouldnt be a problem........

4. ........Once i can get at them that is. Both the outter and inner rockers are very solid but they are definitely reproductions and the fit with the cab corners is poor at best. Also, the DS outter rocker is covering up some rust of the floorpan that can easily be seen from the drain hole in the end of the rocker(i guess it would be partly the inner rocker as well then).

5. The cab corners were also replaced with the rockers. They are COVERED in filler because they couldnt get everything lined up for some reason and the edge body line on the back of the cab does not line up AT ALL. This is not something that is seen when the cab is on the frame, but it bugs me that it isnt right. If the edge body line not lining up was the only issue, i would just leave it, but since they are smothered in filler and they dont line up the greatest with the rockers, I might as well just fix it right.

6. There are several dents scattered on the back of the cab, the main ones being next to the fuel filler hole and above the center of the rear window(which appears to be pretty deep). I can easily get a dolly in behind the couple by the fuel filler hole if i knew some hammer/dolly basics but the one above the rear window seems like it would be easier to just get a cut from another cab and patch it.

7. Speaking of patches, i will be smoothing the firewall for the hvac as well as the fuel filler hole. It will also need a small patch in the cowl as well as one of the side cowl panels. These should be fairly easy to do.

I also want to get a coat of Ryoken Green on this thing but i want to make sure i can go ahead and spray over the freshly blasted surface without further prep. My plan was to just blow it off and wipe it down with a dry rag to release any dust that the blow gun wont get and then blow it off again and then spray it. Is this acceptable or should i go another route?

Well I would prime it first so humidity doesnt cause all that sandblasting to go to waste....

Then slowly work on one patch spot at a time. take the primer off in each spot, fix, reprimer.

yup, take a DA to it right away with some 80 and run over as much as you can, denatured it, and get it in some primer.

Is there anything that i can do to get rid of the oil seapage from the seams that is showing?

rinse with lacquer thinner, scrub/wipe, blow out, repeat till gone..

how about timing from blasting to when i get it in zinc? What is acceptable and what do i need to do if it has been too long? it has been done since last weekend but it was kept inside at least. There are no obvious signs of flashing but im not sure if it is there and i cant see it. Is that too long?

doesn't much matter if your running a sander over just prior to primer... but for untouched stuff, it totally depends if your weather is arizona or maine-like moisturewise.. obviously the quicker the better..

Ohio is by Mi. Mi is humid as heck. Get it sanded and primered. Then worry about the rest.
