So here i am installing a 6.5 non turbo i pulled from a 1990 k2500 into my 83 K5 daily driver/beatwagon that had a tired 6.2 and everything was going great until i hooked up the CS130 alternator incorrectly.
I fed straight 12v (no light, no resistor) to the L terminal and now the alternator that worked when it was pulled, now does not throw out a charge.
DOH!
So from what i read i fried the voltage regulator.
Are we in agreement this is the most likely result?
So here are my options as i see them.
1. Pick up a "OEM quality" volt regulator off Amazon for $18 and replace it myself on the cheap.
If its only gonna cost $20 to replace the failed component, an hour of my time, and its not that delicate of a job i have no problem doing it myself and saving the coin. The alternator is in great shape, it still has the Napa sticker on it showing rebuilt in 2002, so i figure all the other components (brushes) are fine for many years of service.
2. Pick up a AC Delco replacement Alt from Rock Auto for $54, no core.
The CS130 puts out more power than the 10SI the truck came stock with, and i never taxed that alternator that much or often. For $54 and knowing i have a good alternator that will fit right in with no bracket work or serp belt/pulley hassles... sounds like a good option.
3. Replace the CS130 with something with higher output/newer-better design.
I will be installing a winch, some LED lights and typical small radio setup. While this wont over tax the CS130 i am reading they have a heat buildup problem with the rectifier and its really not that great of an alternator. It was a good design in the 80's, but that was 30 years ago. If i am gonna throw $60 at a replacement, would it be wise to use that money towards something different? Is this enough reason to upgrade to something newer? Is there something that will fit in the spot of the CS with minimal fab work?
What do you guys think?
